Our debut card didn’t go as planned, but it was nice to see a track record set by Mario Gutierrez. As with any bad beat at the track, it’s time to flip the page on the program and move on to the next race. This week we’ll be focusing on Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar Racetrack.

We’ll be sticking with the standard breakdown of the plays: budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - The Del Mar Handicap

This is a race that has my interest, particularly in #4 Metaboss. He made his return to California last time out, now under the training of Philip D’Amato where he beat out Calculator (Winner of the 2015 Sham Stakes). He has shown that he wants distance, which this will be the test, being the longest he has ran to date.

He does get a great deal of competition from #7 Flamboyant - winner of Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes and Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes. last year’s Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap 2nd place finisher, #8 Ashleyluvssugar and last year’s Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes and Grade 1 Turf Classic winner #9 Finnegans Wake.

Race 9 - Pacific Classic

This may be one of the best races lined up for this year - we’ll see how Breeders’ Cup Classic goes later this year. We get 2014 (how crazy is that) Kentucky Derby winner #1 California Chrome, #4 Hard Aces who won last year’s Gold Cup, #6 Imperative who won the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic in 2014, AND of course #7 Beholder.

The question in this race is, can California Chrome maintain his undefeated season to create the perfect farewell tour? Can Beholder repeat last year’s 8 1/4 length win? Will Hoppertunity see another win this year? Or… can Dortmund benefit from the longer distance and get back that half-length defeat to California Chrome last time out? This is the kind of race you just simply can’t miss.

Budget Play - $10

  • Race 9: $2 W/P on #7 Beholder ($4)
Taking a Chance Play - $25

  • Race 9: $2 W/P on #7 Beholder ($4)
In It to Win It Play - $52
  • Race 8: $5 W/P/S on #4 Metaboss ($15)
  • Race 8: $1 Exacta Key Box of #4 Metaboss over #7 Flamboyant, #8 Ashleyluvssugar and #9 Finnegans Wake ($6)
  • Race 8: $2 Daily Double using #4 Metaboss and #9 Finnegans Wake with #1 California Chrome and #7 Beholder ($4)
  • Race 9: $5 W/P/S on #7 Beholder ($15)
