Before we even start breaking down today’s plays, have you seen the field for this year’s Travers? There’s about 5-6 horses in this 14 horse field that could take it. I, of course, am hung on one horse, so we’ll see how it goes.

As we’ve done previously, we’ll be sticking with the standard breakdown of the plays: budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - Grade 1 King’s Bishop

This is a race that has a bit of potential. We see the likes of #1 Economic Model who scratched out of the West Virginia Derby to target this race, early Kentucky Derby favorite #6 Mohaymen, Zayat Stables’ #9 Jazzy Times, and #12 Tom’s Ready who looked amazing in the Woody Stephens.

Race 9 - Grade 1 Forego

The second leg of the Grade 1 Pick 4, looks to be a bit chalky to me. I see it as a two horse race between #11 A.P. Indian and #12 Marking, which makes this race one which I’ll only use in my horizontals. Of course, limiting it to 2 horses in a 12 horse field, leaves the door wide open for an upset.

Race 10 - Grade 1 Sword Dancer

This race may be the one that results in a single for most horseplayers. It’s hard to deny #6 Flintshire in this field, or really any field he’s faced recently. Really comes down to a race for 2nd.

Race 11 - Grade 1 Travers

Now onto our feature race of the day, the 147th running of the Travers. We have the Preakness Stakes and Haskell winner #7 Exaggerator, the top 3 finishers from the Jim Dandy #13 Laoban, #4 Governor Malibu and #8 Destin, the Iowa Derby winner #2 American Freedom. Should be an interesting race, especially with no rain in the forecast.

Budget Play - $10
  • Race 11: $5 W/P on #4 Governor Malibu ($10)
Taking a Chance Play - $25
  • Race 8: 50¢ Pick 4 of 1, 9, 12 with 11, 12, with 6, with 4, 7 ($6)
  • Race 10: $2 Daily Double of #1 Grand Tito, #6 Flintshire with #4 Governor Malibu and #7 Exaggerator ($8)
  • Race 11: 50¢ Trifecta of 4,7 over 4,7 over All ($11)
In It to Win It Play - $50
  • Race 11: $10 W/P on #4 Governor Malibu ($20)
  • Race 8: 50¢ Pick 4 of 1, 9, 12 with 11, 12, with 6, with 4, 7 ($6)
  • Race 8: $2 Exacta Box using #1 Economic Model, #6 Mohaymen, #9 Jazzy Times and #12 Tom’s Ready ($24)
ROI Year to Date: $168.50 wagered / $87.20 returned (-$81.30)
