Key Bets for Saturday, February 6, 2016

Fred W. Hooper Stakes – Race 5 at Gulfstream Park - Post Time 1:54 PM ET

Ami's Flatter stands out in this race and if the morning line holds up will actually go to post as the third betting choice at 3 to 1, which may feel like a gift when all is said and done. A newly turned four-year-old, he just ran the race of his life off a six month layoff on January 13, dominating a field of nine by four lengths. John Velazquez rode him for the first time in that race and rides back and as the win came at seven furlongs, this one-turn mile trip poses no issue as he improves in his second start off the layoff.

Bet Ami's Flatter to win at odds of 2 to 1 or higher.

Play a DOUBLE from Ami's Flatter in race 5 to ALL (eight runners) in race 6 then play another DOUBLE from Ami's Flatter to Tammy the Torpedo, Light In Paris and A Little Bit Sassy.

Suwanee River Stakes – Race 6 at Gulfstream Park - Post Time 2:23 PM ET

A Little Bit Sassy finished second in a similar stakes race last month over the course following nearly three months off and appears to be rounding back to the form that saw her win the Grade 3 Regret Stakes in the summer of 2014 before a tough defeat by a head in the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga. Castellano rides for the first time and that's a strong factor as well. Tammy the Torpedo won the Tropical Park Oaks versus three-year-olds only when last seen (December 19) and that was her first race on the Gulfstream Park turf so she has a decent shot to repeat. Light In Paris finished just two necks behind Tammy the Torpedo in that race, her second since coming to the U.S. and first in blinkers. She can improve and turn the tables on Tammy the Torpedo in this situation but the 102 and 103 figures she and Tammy the Torpedo earned in that race are far enough behind the 107 figure A Little Bit Sassy earned last month that they will need to run the best races of their career to beat her.

Bet A Little Bit Sassy to win at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

Play an exacta box consisting of A Little Bit Sassy, Tammy the Torpedo and Light In Paris.

Play an additional exacta consisting of A Little Bit Sassy, Tammy the Torpedo and Light In Paris over A Little

Bit Sassy, Tammy the Torpedo and Light In Paris, E.B. Ryder and Rainha Da Bateria

Santa Anita Pick 3 – Races Four through Six – Race Four Post Time 5:00 PM ET

With Songbird a "single" (the only horse to use) in race 5 (the Las Virgenes Stakes), we can turn her likely 1 to 5 or 1 to 9 odds into about 2 to 1 with the following ticket which has a cost of just $15 at the $1 level. Race 4 – I Will Score, Mor Spirit, Uncle Lino

Race 5 – Songbird

Race 6 – Lovenseek, Tuco, Kenjisstorm, Captain Tim, Dylan ward

Donn Handicap – Race 13 at Gulfstream Park - Post Time 5:53 PM ET

Mexicoma ran one of the best races in his career last month at the distance of the Donn when winning the Sunshine

Millions Classic Stakes in spite of trouble and in a field of 10. Although the race was restricted, the 113 Equibase

Speed Figure appears legitimate and although a few points from the 119-124 best of the main contenders like Mshawish and Valid, Mexicoma may be on the improve and opening at 8 to 1 we can pay to find out. Mshawish won the Hal's Hope Stakes over the track but has never run nine furlongs on dirt, although he did win at the trip on turf and he is a grade 1 winner on that surface. Valid has as much heart as any horse racing today and just missed to Mshawish in the Hal's Hope. He won the Iselin Stakes last summer at the trip and would be no surprise.

Madefromlucky was beaten by Valid and although the jockey losing the whip at the 3/8 pole was an excuse he just doesn't appear good enough to win but should be considered for the runner-up spot on exacta tickets.

Bet Mexicoma to win at odds of 3/1 or better.

Play an exacta consisting of Mexicoma, Valid and Mshawish over Mexicoma, Valid and Mshawish and Madefromlucky.

San Antonio Stakes – Race 7 at Santa Anita - Post Time 6:30 PM ET (3:30 PT)

Imperative has run two good races behind California Chrome and Dortmund since taking blinkers off and coming back from a layoff His form is on the upswing once again and that makes him the one to beat in the San Antonio Stakes in a field in which many are off form, bring long losing streaks into the race or may not want to win. Cyrus Alexander earned a career best 110 Equibase figure when second by a neck to Cat Burglar at Santa Anita last month. Showing good versatility when rallying for the win two starts back then battling head-and-head for the lead for the last half-mile in his most recent race, Cyrus Alexander has shown maturity and tenacity not shown previously and it would not be hard for me to imagine him posting the upset in this race. Cat Burglar was returning from nearly five months rest in that highly rated race last month, earning the same 111 as Cyrus Alexander when victorious by a neck. With room to improve and with many of these having big question marks regarding their form, he must be considered strongly.

Bet Imperative to win at odds of 5 to 2 or higher. Consider a second win bet on Cyrus Alexander and Cat Burglar at 5 to 2 or more as well.

Play and exacta as well as a trifecta consisting of Imperative, Cyrus Alexander and Cat Burglar over Imperative, Cyrus Alexander and Cat Burglar and Hoppertunity (using the same horses in third for the trifecta).

# 8 Notmuchtolookat 2/1
# 7 Stan's Old Habits 10/1

Race 4 Start of www.123bet.com Pick 6.

# 2 Aziforcast 7/5 ..... Very consistant should loose that runner up tag this evening... drops a tad in distance which will help the cause over a mile.
# 1 Precious Wish 6/1 ..... Changed barns since last race here when she was a fast finishing third gets the rail for assistance.
# 4 Petticoat Lance 20/1 ..... Has done well at this track in previous seasons. New barn and jock this evening comes straight back after a strolling run in a similar contest on the 8th Jan.

Race 5
# 6 Livin'a Prayer 9/2 ..... Lot to like about this 5yo mare in only her second race. Debuted NYE here finished really good for the show place at big odds Contreras sticks with her and he knows a lot about poly tracks. gets first time lasix which in a female is one of my favourite angles.
# 3 Blonde In The City 3/1 ..... Beat the above in last by 3 lengths they meet on same terms but the pick has the lasix and improvement on her side.
# 8 Market Mews 5/1 ..... Lightly raced 4yo who comes in from Indy training down at Keeneland trainer is in nice form here. Drops from the mile distance dont discount

Race 6
# 8 Cash Dance 2/1 ..... Retains top jock and she has taken to the Poly track winning her last here. Gets an extra furlong today but in fine form to deal with the extra yardage.
# 9 I'm Extraordinary 5/2 ..... Barn is in extraordinary form 50% strike rate at the track. 4yo filly drops from route to sprint distance will put her speed to the ultimate test in this contest.
# 2 Brave Ellen 12/1 ..... Well traveled 4yo filly comes off a win at Mountaineer over a mile another front running type will make the front end interesting for sure.

Race 7
# 8 Patty's Mischief 3/1 ..... Young 3yo fillies in a 6 1/2 f MSW 18k. Top trainer Maker and jock Jimenez team up with this gal who has found a way to get beat on her two efforts here. Drops in distance which should make the difference.
# 3 Itzpapaloti 12/1 ..... This gal has solid breeding and connections.... trainer is 100% at the track big debut expected.
# 1 Lily Of The Nile 20/1 ..... Another debutant getting first time lasix comes up from Lexington solid breeding and gets the rail which will help big time.

Race 8
# 5 Smoking Romance 3/1 ..... Drops from 40k OC to 25k solid debut on return to racing in the last race here does like this track and IS the one.
# 8 Marvelous Sky 5/1 ..... Now this gal comes down from Woodbine via Keeneland formerly with Mark Casse has won on the poly track.... in with a big shout if he strips fit from the layoff.
# 2 Da Money Man 15/1 ..... First time lasix for this lightly raced 4yo gelding quick turn around from last race where he broke stride coming into the straight. Bullit work puts him right back in the picture.

Race 9
# 1 Latin Wild Cat 7/2 ..... Keeps promising apprentice aboard after a good run in last race here on the 10th, gets the rail for a quick turnaround.
# 4 Jarboe 4/1 ..... Two good races here one a win does like the distance and track.
# 11 Charnocks 5/1 ..... Drops from the mile to a sprint can handle the distance and the poly track for a show at least.

Key Bets for Saturday, January 9, 2016

Interborough Stakes – Race 3 at Aqueduct (Post Time 1:20 PM ET)

Princess Violet was returning from six months off in the Garland of Roses Stakes last month and was clearly second though no match for Room for Me. She won the Grade 1 Madison Stakes last spring and has been worse than 2nd just two times in her 13 race career so is the key here opening at 6/1. La Verdad wasn't disgraced when 2nd in the Breeders' Cup then finished 6th versus males. She can't be totally discounted but has had a hard fall campaign and can be beaten.

Bet Princess Violet to win at odds of 2 to 1 or higher.

Play an exacta box consisting of consisting of Princess Violet and Room for Me and play an exacta box consisting of Princess Violet and La Verdad.

Turf Dash Stakes – Race 3 at Tampa Bay Downs (Post Time 1:27 PM ET)

Normandy Crossing can take the edge off any potential pace advantage Richies Sweetheart might otherwise have had, leading to a hot early pace which benefits Beantown Saint nicely. He closed from 3rd to win his last 2 starts, both turf sprints, and can do the same thing here. Power Alert is a multiple stakes winner who returns from six months off and who won the last two times he came back from layoffs. Successful Native loves sprinting on turf and is a stakes winner as well who must be respected. Night Officer is a competitive horse but likes to finish 2nd.

Bet Beantown Saint to win at odds of 3 to 1 or higher. Consider a win bet on Successful Native at 3 to 1 or more as well.

Marshua's River Stakes– Race 4 at Gulfstream Park (Post Time 1:35 PM ET)

A Little Bit Sassy finished 6th of 13 in a similar grade 3 stakes when last seen three months ago, missing by a head in a stakes right before that. Rosario takes over for the first time and the mare put in a very strong half-mile workout coming into the race which leads me to believe she can fire a big shot here and post the upset. Partisan Politics won the Pebbles Stakes in October off a short rest and returns from a similar layoff today. The strong team of Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz, Jr. won nearly 30% of their races together in 2015 and the newly turned 4 year old has a strong shot. Strike Charmer won at the end of November following nearly six months off with a big rally from next to last and should improve second off the layoff. Sandiva won the similar Suwanee River Stakes last February over the course under Castellano, who rides here, but she had no strong excuse for her 3rd place finish in the Grade 3 My Charmer Stakes when last seen on 11/21.

Bet A Little Bit Sassy to win and place at odds of 4 to 1 or higher. Consider a similar win and place wager on Strike Charmer as well.

Fort Lauderdale Stakes – Race 10 at Gulfstream Park (Post Time 4:35 PM ET)

Lukes Alley has done little wrong in his career, with 10 first or second place finishes in 12 races and over half a million dollars in earning. He was favored in a grade 2 stakes in Canada when last seen two months ago, missing by a half-length, and he's won on turf. He opens at 20/1 with Lopez riding and has a huge chance to upset. Lochte loves the Gulfstream Park turf course, with five wins in nine races. He has won three straight stakes and gets 2015 North American leading rider Castellano and the rail, so deserves a lot of respect. War Correspondent returns from nearly nine months off but won off a 14 month layoff earlier in his career as well as won a similar grade 3 stakes on the Gulfstream Park turf before the layoff so can't be ruled out as a contender either. Money Talker, like Lukes Alley¸ ran second in a stakes in Canada when last seen and could have a say in the outcome. Key to Power won the Claiming Crown Emerald Stakes last month at Gulfstream, scheduled for the grass but run on the main track. He's an 11 time winner on turf and is yet another horse opening at much higher odds (20/1) than he should.

Bet Lukes Alley to win and place at 4 to 1 or higher. Consider additional win and place bets on Money Talker and Key To Power.

San Pasqual Stakes – Race 8 at Santa Anita (Post Time 7 PM ET)

California Chrome returns from more than nine months off, running two-turns off a long layoff versus horses who for the most part have run much more recently. Based on races 11 months ago and longer he opens as the prohibitive favorite. Sure, his best race can win but there's absolutely no guarantee his best race may be forthcoming off such a long layoff. On top of that there are number of horses really off form, such as Mystery Train, Alfa Bird, Blingo and Hard Aces. That leaves Point Piper as very playable opening at 10/1, particularly as he gets leading rider Bejarano. Point Piper missed by a neck in a stakes in his most recent race and has worked exceptionally since then so may be the key to profit. Imperative finished second to Dortmund in the Native Diver Stakes when last seen, and Hoppertunity has been second in two straight stakes so both are contenders as well.

Bet Point Piper to win at odds of 4 to 1 or more.

Exclusively for 123BET.COM HALLANDALE BEACH, FL., January 8, 2016

Next weekend, the industry will be handing out racing’s ultimate honor in recognition of recent achievement and historical context. This weekend, however, the tracks will distribute significant pieces of hardware from coast to coast to winners of three graded stakes in South Florida, two in Southern California, notwithstanding several grade-quality fields masquerading as listed stakes.

El Nino may have a significant effect on how things will shake out in the West while in the Southwest the forecast is favorable--a good thing considering two of the three graded offerings at Gulfstream Park are scheduled on turf.

The other matches Mshawish (8-5) vs. Matrooh (9-5) and a likely supporting cast in the G3 Hal’s Hope; think Donn prep here. The big story, of course, is the return of 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome (4-5) in the G2 San Pascual sans Dortmund but with Hoppertunity (5-2) in the role of obligatory Bob Baffert trainee.

Three-year-olds out West will start their distance programs with the G3 Sham while five hours north of Hallandale via Alligator Alley, turf sprinters will do their thing in the Turf Dash at Tampa Bay. New York’s Interborough for older filly and mare sprinters features the season’s debut of 2015 F & M Sprint finalist La Verdad (1/1).

So, what to do with La Verdad? Flat vs. males in the Fall Highweight coming off an enervating BC Sprint placing, is the brief freshening since and class relief enough to get her back in top form? Consider the upcoming Barbara Fritchie is the career-ending target. I don’t have an answer here and am not that curious given the early line odds.

Four of the remaining six fillies have a chance to upset.

BETTABLES: Won’t know which way to go until opening odds are posted. Room for Me (5-2), the second fastest filly on the Thoro-Graph and Pricci Energy scales, is the logical danger. But two slower price shots intrigue: Willet (12-1), 3-for-4 on the winter track and a remarkable (12) 7-3-2 at the trip; and forward-marching Dancing House (8-1), 3-for-5 including a nose defeat since adding Lasix, is returning for Kiaran McLaughlin, 25% profitable with 90-days+ returnees.

Successful runners in these races have one thing in common: They are specialists. Four of the 10 entrants; Power Alert (5-2), filly Richies Sweetheart (5-1), Beantown Saint (6- 1) and Successful Native (6-1) are a combined 18-for-30 lifetime. Considering all the trips and traps in large fields, that’s quite an accomplishment.

Having said that, Power Alert (5-2) is a solid favorite--not despite the layoff but because of it. His career best effort on the Thoro-Graph scale came following a 268-day layup. The gelded 6-year-old is 2-for-2 fresh, a graded winner getting class relief, has versatility and top connections; owner-trainer Brian Lynch and Tampa leading rider, the gifted Antonio Gallardo.

BETTABLES: We think Power Alert is any price to key this and will include two of the three above, ‘Beantown’ and ‘Successful’, in exactas. We are desperate to get significantly slower Gallery (20-1) into the number. In his lone turf sprint, Saratoga’s Quick Call, he chased an extremely fast pace while racing very wide, was in contention at headstretch and battled gamely until tiring in the final sixteenth. He turns back off a series of routes for Michael Dini, profitable when going route to sprint.

I’ll see your Pletcher and raise you a Clement, a Mott, Matz and two Browns. In other words, this is a beauty--a stepping stone to bigger and better for sure--but still a graded opportunity for one of the nine entrants, three MTOs notwithstanding.

Todd Pletcher’s Sandiva (9-5) that will take a whole lot of beating. Pole sitting with tactical speed and Javier, newly turned 5-year-old has been working bullets at the deep Palm Beach training center, is graded placed thrice including a win, and returns with excellent spacing to a course over which she’s (3) 2-1-0 lifetime.

BETTABLES: While there are some very capable mares in here, we can’t get past the fave. We’re looking at three exotics players: Partisan Politics (4-1) returning for Chad Brown and profitable with this spacing; Tuttipaesi (6-1), a sharp prep winner stretching to her optimal distance [2-for-2], and price shot A Little Bit Sassy (15-1), who developed late last year and working strongly at Palm Meadows for her return.

While some undoubtedly are using this race as a first stop to the G1 GP Turf Handicap, it’s an important South Florida fixture and a coveted prize. Lochte (3-1) is one of those rags-to-riches trainees for Marcus Vitali, who this time named Javier Castellano to ride at time of entry. The course lover has won six of 11 starts and his recent 3F Palm Meadows blowout was the fastest of the week. He’s pole sitting and is ready to rock but will have to be. This 11- horse scrum is highly competitive. The problem is the alternatives are hard to separate.

BETTABLES: Lochte rates strongly to win this despite the 123-pound assignment. After that, we’re considering possible upsetters War Correspondent (4-1), a course lover training steadily for Christophe Clement at Payson Park since early November and “now horse” Heart to Heart (6-1), a four-time graded winner as a 2015 4YO and breezing well for Brian Lynch at PMM. He’s 3-for-4 beneath Leparoux who re-rides here.

Three of the eight entrants expected to attract most of the parimutuel support have compelling records; the issue is those triumphs came on turf, not over anticipated-sloppy two-turn dirt. What to do? Good question: Three of the runners are Doug O’Neill’s, two are Bob Baffert’s, and another comes via Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Even without unknown conditions, we’d have left five of the nine open. Consider: Rare Candy, very well bred for wet, made one start on dirt, beaten 7 lengths by presumptive champion Nyquist. That’s worthy of respect in today’s Grade 3. Dressed in Hermes impressed on Del Mar turf and has enough wet-track pedigree and Mike Smith.

There’s Found Money, 1-for-1 at the trip and 2-for-2 on the strip; I’malreadythere, twice graded placed on dirt, including the G1 Los Alamitos Futurity behind Mor Spirit; and Baffert’s pair of Collected, second to ‘Hermes’ in the grassy G3 DeMille, and Let’s Meet in Rio, who jumped up first time going long and has two-sided wet breeding.

BETTABLES: A pair of 6-1 shots are interesting as potential win plays; Rare Candy and recent maiden breaker Let’s Meet in Rio, the “other” Baffert. We’re most likely to go there since the Flatter colt jumped up first-time long at Los Al. Probably prudent to complete exacta box with Baffert early favorite Collected (3-1). Price is a big win key here.

Expectations are high that the track will be under water by late afternoon according to Racing Secretary Rick Hammerle Thursday morning. As the world knows, California Chrome is an extremely popular dual classics Horse of the Year champion making his first start since last year’s Dubai World Cup and who’s never run on a wet track.

But he trained well on it said straight-shooting Art Sherman and we’re taking that to the bank. If you haven’t viewed it yet; find his most recent workout at Santa Anita; six furlongs in 1:10.03 with a strong gallop out. If this is as advertised, a prep for a return to Dubai, it needs to be a strong effort to go against the world’s best at 10 furlongs off a single race.

He’ll probably be 80-90% fit but the plus is handled Meydan dirt very well. He has a strong wet pedigree and may be controlling speed.

BETTABLES: If he handles the conditions, this one could be over early with the classy returnee setting or stalking the pace and in control. Because of the unknown and the layup, early line 4-5 odds may be available ante post; those are fair odds. Exacta possibilities are obviously Hoppertunity (5-2) and two price shots; strong-working slop winner Point Piper (10-1) and successful wet-tracker Mystery Train (30-1) getting Mike Smith.
