Let's face it, we all try to make as much money, with as little money as possible. It’s safe too ay hitting a Pick 4 on a $16 ticket is more appealing than hitting one on a $60 ticket. We’ll be doing a segment on featured races and providing budget plays, so that players of any bankroll level can take a chance.

Our debut card will be at Emerald Downs, on their feature race day - Longacres Mile Day. We’ll be offering a budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - Longacres Mile, Emerald Downs

Stryker Phd is seeking his 3rd Longacres Mile win here today, as well as his first win of the year. In both of his races this year, O B Harbor (who is currently on a 4 race win streak and undefeated thus far this year) spoiled the race for him. In addition to these two, Kentucky Derby winning trainer, Doug O’Neill ships Sammy Mandeville up from Santa Anita, and Jerry Hollendorfer sends in 2 himself; one of which will be ridden by Kentucky Derby winning jockey, Mario Gutierrez.

Ellis Starr. National Handicapper, provides his Early 123racing Pick 6 preview for Emerald Downs Longacres Day, Sunday 16th August.

Race #6 Top Contenders: Sabrina, Tabled With Gold, Haleys Rainbow

Sabrina led late and settled for 2nd against tougher allowance/optional claimers 3 weeks ago, winning two in a row before that, and figures to be in the thick of the action at the finish today. Tabled With Gold drops out of stakes and won a year ago in June on the same drop, then won again here at Emerald last August, so can return to top form. Haleys Rainbow is the one the rest have to catch to win, having led from start to finish in 3 of 4 races at the meeting and also having won at the higher 40K allowance/optional claiming level recently.

Race #7 Top Contenders: Lady Rosberg, Our Little Hen, Sarahline

Lady Rosberg can be a SINGLE (the only horse to use) on our main 123Racing Pick 6 tickets, having won her 3rd in a row last month when taking the similar Boeing Handicap, by 5 lengths with gas left in the tank. Now 7 for 14 in her career and with the ability to win on the lead or from off the pace she's going to be very tough once again. Our Little Hen won very nicely from off the pace 3 weeks ago over the track but her 92 Equibase Figure needs to be improved upon considerably, our Lady Rosberg needs to regress off her 103 figure effort, in order for Our Little Hen to win again. Sarahline finished second to Lady Rosberg in the Boeing and before that led late and missed by a neck at this nine furlong trip so although with just one win to go along with six runner-up finishes in her career deserves consideration as a contender as well.

Race #8 Top Contenders: Alert Bay, Stryker Phd, Sammy Mandeville, Noosito

This year's edition of the Longacres Mile should be spectacular, with a field of 12 and a sizzling hot pace provided by Fleet Eagle and Modern. In the prep race, the Mount Rainier, the half-mile was 44 flat and the six furlong time 109 and this will be similar, setting up a cavalry charge of stalkers and closers late. Alert Bay has won over three-quarters of a million in his career and he's only four years old. He makes his 3rd start off a layoff from January to June and is set to peak in this race, back to the form that saw him win the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes last December at Santa Anita. He is reunited with Walcott, up for THREE straight stakes wins last summer and fall, and he has been working splendidly at Golden Gate in preparation for this race for high percentage trainer Wright. Stryker Phd is on the identical pattern that led to victory in last year's Longacres Mile, having won both the Budweiser and Mount Rainier Stakes. He will love the fast early pace scenario and will be flying in the stretch as usual so would be no surprise if repeating in this race. Sammy Mandeville may be moving as a team with Stryker Phd in the lane, similar to the race he put in May 2 when 2nd in the Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes to Catch a Flight, who won two more graded stakes since. Veteran Solis rode him in that race and takes the trip to Emerald, another good sign. Noosito led late and missed by a neck to Stryker Phd in the Budweiser then regressed when 4th in the Mount Rainier. Gutierrez stays and the five furlong workout a week ago suggests he will snap back to competitive form.

Race #9 Top Contender: Tribal Waters

Tribal Watersis a necessary SINGLE on our 123Racing Pick 6 tickets and a standout, having just won easily by 3 lengths at this level. He's still eligible for it although he has 3 wins because one of them came in a 6,250 claimer that is irrelevant when assessing who can run in the race. Mawing rides back and it would take extraordinary improvement on the part of any of the others to beat him if he repeats that last effort.

Race #10 Top Contenders: Botch, Remembertobreathe, Grinder Sparksaglo

With a very hot pace assured as Scat Daddybaby only wants to run the first half in 44 and change and with Westley stretching out from sprints, Botch looks very tough to beat again. Gong for his 3rd straight win and 4th in his last five starts, the gelding has done everything right since returning in April off an 8 month layoff and moving to the Wright barn. The 99 then 103 Equibase Figures from his last two wins make it likely he can earn his 6th career win (from 7 total wins) here at Emerald. Remembertobreathe finished 2nd to Botch, five length behind, last out, while Grinder Sparksaglo was 2nd, beaten a head, to Remembertobreathe when that one won on 6/27. Both are nice horses who combined have been first or second at Emerald Downs in 8 of 14 races and should be around at the finish.

Race #11 Top Contenders: Italian Warrior, Square Jimmer, He's Dreamy

Italian Warrior finished 2nd under identical conditions two weeks ago, beating Square Jimmer by a nose for that runner-up spot. Italian Warrior won 2 in a row in May then ran badly when in too tough and trying two turns but back to sprinting at this non-winners of 3 level was the ticket to a big effort last out and he gets slight preference today to win repeating that effort. Square Jimmer won in May at the 4K non-winners of 2 level then like Italian Warrior was either overmatched or tried around two turns. He led by 2 in the stretch last out before being run down but with a positive jockey change to Gutierrez (up for that last win) he could run well enough to hold on in the stretch today. He's Dreamy had significant traffic trouble in the same race as the other two or may have finished better than 5th of 10. He won before that and deserves a chance to make amends.

Suggested Ticket

Race 6 – Sabrina, Tabled With Gold, Haleys Rainbow

Race 7 – Lady Rosberg

Race 8 – Alert Bay, Stryker Phd, Sammy Mandeville, Noosito

Race 9 – Tribal Waters

Race 10 – Botch

Race #6 Contenders: Surprise Sale, Northern Force

Surprise Sale not only loves to win races (10 for 23 in his career) but enters the race in sharp form off a pair of wins over the track. He's beaten tougher and can stand the raise from 2,500 to 3,500 claiming here so certainly can win again. Northern Force shipped in from Arizona to win in June then missed by under a length after breaking slowly 3 weeks ago first off the Snowden claim. Sanchez rides back and with a clean start and the same effort he's got a square shot to win as well.

Race #7 Contenders: Nearlycocktailtime, Jazz Queen, Dance Affair

Nearlycocktailtime won at this identical 15K claiming level three back when sitting in third in the early stages then taking over near the wire. He stepped up too high in class and failed next out then did not rebound back at this 15K level last out BUT with a jockey change to Couton and in a field in which FOUR of the other six are need-the-lead types he should get up in time. Jazz Queen closed nicely from 5th to win going away last out at the much lower 7,500 level and if he can handle the 100% raise in class, not impossible for the strong Metz barn, he's got a shot too. Dance Affair ships in from Northern California, a hidden class drop, off a pair of 3rd place finishes that if repeated versus these give him a chance to succeed.

Race #8 Contenders: Until You, Remembertobreathe, Deputy's Command

Until You was 3 for 5 at Emerald before his last two, but had reasonable excuses in both. In the first on 6/15 he was coming back from 21 months, in a stakes, around two turns, without a prep and was not ready at all to run. He shortened up to a sprint last out on 7/4 and ran decently when 3rd to a wire-to-wire winner and so now stretching out from the rail I expect Matias to send him to the lead from the start, from which he will be very tough to catch. Remembertobreathe won two back over the track at this mile trip with a nice finish from 5th then was overmatched in a stakes in which he had no shot to be anywhere close to rallying when the leaders sizzled early. Back where he belongs he can rebound to competitive form. Deputy's Command steps up from claiming and I'd consider him overmatched except for the fact Ortiz is doing nearly everything right at the meeting winning 1/3 of the time. He will be closing late and can post the upset.

Race #9 Contenders: Kiss My Lulu, Princess Kennedy (Can use ALL 5 on some tickets)

Kiss My Lulu won under wraps in her career debut last month and from the outside can either control the pace once more of sit off Princess Kennedy and My Heart Goes On, both who won wire-to-wire as well in their debut wins. As such, she looks most logical to win this year's Angie C. stakes. Princess Kennedy looks next most probable, having also won impressively last out, but that was just 15 days ago so maybe it's too soon.

Race #10 Contender: Our Little Hen

Our Little Hen is a "single" (the only horse to use) in this leg of the 123Racing Pick 6,the mare having shown nothing in the Boeing Handicap earlier this month when shipping back up from Southern California but getting class relief and a jockey change to Couton designed to get her to show her speed as she did in March at Golden Gate when winning back-to-back in routes like this one.

Race #11 Main Contenders: Dawnluvsthelawn, Sequestered, Alexa Alexa

If any of the other five entrants finished in the top 2 here I would be very surprised as they have shown no ability to date. Dawnluvsthelawn drops to the 5K level for the first time while shipping in from Northern California and getting the main local winning jockey (Steiner) for the barn. No matter what her form looks like on paper to date, against these she could look like a winner. Sequestered finished 2nd last out under these conditions and if the top pick doesn't fire could win by default. Alexa Alexa finished 3rd, 3 lengths behind Sequestered in that 7/12 race, and as that was his first ever two turn race with just logical improvement off the experience he could run well enough to win.

Suggested Ticket

Race 5 – Surprise Sale, Northern Force

Race 6 – Nearlycocktailtime

Race 7 – Until You

Race 8 – All Five Entrants

Race 9 – Our Little Hen

Race 10 – Dawnluvsthelawn, Sequestered, Alexa Alexa

Cost $60

National Handicapper Ellis Starr, previews the 123racing P6 at Emerald Downs.

Remember folks, $2,000 must be won in today's www.123bet.com PICK6 contest at this track

Race #5 Contender: Fullshot

The key to keeping down the cost of the 123Racing Pick 6 is to find one to three "singles" (the only horse to use on a race) in the sequence, and with that in mind Fullshot is very playable. Shipping in from Golden Gate, the gelding is racing at this 7,500 claiming non-winners of 2 level for the first time and joining the very sharp Metz barn and repeating his runner-up effort one before last he should earn career win #2 in this situation.

Race #6 Contenders: Coach Royal, Songandabullet

If the race goes as drawn, it appears likely that My Chief and Rocky's Quest will both want the lead from the start and get tired after battling for the front. Under that scenario, Coach Royal and Songandabullet have about an equal chance of success. Coach Royal has won his last two races, both at a mile, moving up nicely in class from 5K to 8K to this 15K level. Duran was up for both wins and rides back and the gelding will be far back early as usual and could be in front at the end once again. Songandabullet went long off a nice sprint win last out and was beaten a head for 3rd and a length for the win. Making his 2nd start in a route he could be much stronger and return to winning form.

Race #7 Contenders: Pete's Slew, Spot of Salt, Calculated Chaos, Dare Me Devil

This race is even more top heavy in "early" speed types than the last, and very playable as the two morning line favorites (Gross Misconduct and Memphis Monster) are two of the three "need the lead" types. Pete's Slew rallied a bit too late last out but was only beaten a head for 3rd after winning two in a row and beat much tougher last year so still fits at the level for a big effort with a key jockey change to Couton. Spot of Salt makes his 2nd start after 8 months off and needed that last race so much better can be expected particularly with a big half mile workout over the track. He has 16 wins in his career and has won at Emerald Downs before, more reasons to like his chances. Calculated Chaos drops from allowance to claiming and the last time he ran in a claimer, 3 back at this level he won. He finished 2nd and 3rd to those tougher foes so is another with a chance to rebound into the winner's circle. Dare Me Devil rallied to miss by a half-length under identical conditions 3 weeks ago and has been 1st or 2nd in 23 of 45 races so must be considered a contender.

Race #8 Contenders: Finding More, Sabrina, Curly Girly

Finding More ran badly last out, but in a stakes at a mile, winning 2 in a row before that at this 6 1/2 furlong trip in claiming level races. He likes to win and the drop and cut back in distance could help him do just that again. Sabrina came back from 7 months off in April and led from start to finish then went to Hastings and came from off the pace to win. Mitchell was up for the local win and back aboard today gives the filly a big shot to run well enough to win off another layoff. Curly Girly ships in from Golden Gate for the good Ross barn and her 3 local workouts have been nothing short of awesome, signaling an "A" effort good enough to win just like the one she put in 3 races back at the one lower NW1X allowance level.

Race #9 Contenders: Hoodslide, Christmas Caballo, Its Allabout Jerry

Hoodslide is one of three beneficiaries of a likely hot early pace battle between Awesome Indian (the likely favorite) and Betsy's Gold (who stretches out to two turns off a very fast sprint). Hoodslide took blinkers off for the stretch out to two turns for the very first time last out and won as he pleased by two lengths under Zunino, who rides back. He's lightly raced and still improving so is very logical to win his 2nd in a row. Christmas Caballo and Its Allabout Jerry finished 3rd and 2nd, respectively at the level at this mile trip 3 weeks ago. Christmas Caballo rallied from 4th in that race while Its Allabout Jerry rallied from last of 7 so from the rail and saving ground Christmas Caballo may get first run on the tiring leaders (along with Hoodslide) and hold off a flying Its Allabout Jerry, but both are capable of winning.

Race #10 Main Contenders: Recon Patrol, Land Rocket

Recon Patrol would be a "single" on our 123Racing Pick 6 if not for the fact Land Rocket is the only horse in the field dropping to this 5K maiden claiming level for the 1st time. Recon Patrol missed by a nose and a neck last out under similar conditions and that is by far the best last race in the field. However, there's no telling how Land Rocket may improve by default after facing much tougher and with a good jockey change to Duran as well as having rallied from last to 3rd one before last versus those tougher foes he's got a strong shot as well.

Suggested Ticket

Race 5 – Fullshot

Race 6 – Songandabullet, Coach Royal

Race 7 – Pete's Slew

Race 8 – Sabrina, Finding More, Curly Girly

Race 9 – Christmas Caballo, Its Allabout Jerry, Hoodslide

Race 10 – Land Rocket, Recon Patrol

National Handicapper Ellis Starr previews Saturday's Emerald Downs Card for the 123racing Pick 6 with a $2,000 pool Guarantee.

Race #5 Contenders: Hock, Lord Calezaar, Whiskeyonthehouse

Hock stretches back out to a mile first off the claim and won at a mile one before that. Steiner replaces Couton, who moves to Lord Calezaar, but that's not an issue so likely to go to post at higher odds than the other two contenders he gets slight preference. Lord Calezaar has won 2 races in a row, both at this mile trip. The last win came when racing at Emerald Downs for the very first time and Couton rides back even for the new trainer off the claim, so from the rail he could win his 3rd in a row. Whiskeyonthehouse rallied for 4th of 10 in spite of traffic trouble last out and at a higher claiming level and won before that at this mile trip so would be no surprise if returning to winning form on the drop in class.

Race #6 Contender: Kandra

We always need to find a single horse or two somewhere in the 123Racing Pick 6 sequence to cut down the cost of the bet and Kandra is the easy choice in this race. She missed by less than a length sprinting twice in a row at the meeting and when coming back from 6 months off then off the Metz claim last out ran poorly when sent long. Cutting back to one turn and with Mawing aboard as he was for back-to-back wins last summer the drop from the 10K level all the way to this 2,500 level makes her very tough to beat.

Race #7 Contenders: Citizen Kitty, Haleys Rainbow, Lucky Echo, Sailingforthesun, Seattles Best Copy

This race is nearly impossible to handicap because all FIVE horses listed above have earned their ONLY wins leading from start to finish. None rally have a pace edge and the only horse that doesn't need the lead, Sneaking a Kiss, is off form but perhaps she might get up by default. Thank goodness there are a couple of singles in the sequence because the best strategy is to use as many as possible in this race.

Race #8 Contenders: Diamonds Dena, Belladiva, Decatur Princess, Wickedizaswickeduz, Sunpenny

On one hand, Diamonds Dena is a logical single, having won 2 in a row and three of her last 5 races, the last at this mile trip on the stretch out. Confidently raised from the 10K level to this 25K allowance/optional claiming level, the 88 Equibase Figure earned last out is top in the field and suggests she can win versus these. Belladiva won at this 25K claiming level last out sprinting and didn't run badly in a route stakes last June at Emerald Downs so has a shot, as does Decatur Princess, who finished fast for 2nd into a horse no one was going to beat and ended up 5 clear of the next horse. Wickedizaswickeduz stretches out in top form with a win and 3 runner-up finishes recently including a route so could run competitive again. Sunpenny goes long off 2 sprints following a layoff since last year, a good foundation, and since she missed by 3/4 of a length last out and the horse she beat for 2nd came back to win she's another with a shot.

Race #9 Contender: Belle Hill

Belle Hill sticks out here like a sore thumb, coming off a dominant 4 length win in the Irish Day Handicap last month in her first route. She's lightly raced and still improving and it won't take much more than a repeat to beat these and win her 2nd stakes in a row.

Race #10 Main Contenders: Fay Belle, National Wonder, In Private, Andiamo Deb

Fay Belle gets a good outside post and fits perfectly at this non-winners of 2 lifetime claiming level off a maiden win last month over the track with Barton in the saddle for the first time. She makes her 3rd start off a layoff so has more improving to do. National Wonder cuts back from a route to a sprint and won right before her last in a sprint so is similar to the top pick in terms of fitting at the level yet opens at much higher odds of 10/1. In Private missed by a half-length at the finish in a big effort under similar conditions last month and as the horse she beat by 5 lengths for 2nd already improved to win her next start we can expect an effort good enough to win as well. Andiamo Deb is the one the others have to catch to win as her only win came on 6/12 leading from start to finish in a sprint. She tried two turns last out and tired after leading through the point this race ends so back around one turn she could get brave and go all the way.

Suggested Tickets

Race 5 – Hock, Lord Calezaar, Whiskeyonthehouse

Race 6 – Kandra

Race 7 – Citizen Kitty, Haleys Rainbow, Lucky Echo, Sailingforthesun, Seattles Best Copy

Race 8 – Diamonds Dena

Race 9 – Belle Hill

Race 10 – Fay Belle, National Wonder

Cost $60

Alternate ticket 1 would add In Private and Andiamo Deb in the 10th race for a total cost of $120. Alternate ticket 2 would use only Haleys Rainbow and Lucky Echo in race 7 and adding Sunpenny and Wickedizaswickeduz in race 8 for a total cost of $72.

Hits: 1388

Last Saturday's $56 ticket by National Handicapper Ellis Starr did very well. When the only pick was scratched in the ninth race, if you substituted the heavy favorite on the same $56 ticket you would have won over $1,000 as the ticket would have finished second and third.

Emerald Downs 123racing P6 early Preview for Saturday 11th July.

Race #5 Contenders: Roxie Hart, Katsthoughts, Knife Fork Zoom

With Hollywood Holly, Cheeky Stone and Laff Itup Fuzzball all being need-the-lead types, Roxie Hart leads a trio of closers that should run best of all. The mare closed to pull off by 2 lengths three back at the higher 3,500 non-winners of 2 lifetime level and the cut back from 6 furlongs to 5 1/2 today could help her return to that kind of form. Katsthoughts missed by a nose one before last at the level. Mitchell rode her than but not last time out off that effort when 3rd and with Mitchell getting back on she could run a lot better. Knife Fork Zoom missed 2nd by a head to Katsthoughts on that 6/13 race then ran poorly but is not a need-the-lead type and could get first run on the tiring pacesetter here and hang on to the wire.

Race #6 Contenders: Beautranda, Hetty, Liberty Lake, Raised on Robbery

Beautranda won by a neck three back and missed by inches in her 2 starts since, all at Golden Gate. She ran well here at Emerald Downs last June and should fire a nice shot off a 4 month layoff. Hetty didn't get the lead she likes at the start last out and faded badly to last but finds a field devoid of any speed of her kind and should go for the lead as she did three back to tougher when holding second well or more like last  July when she led from start to finish to win by four lengths. Liberty Lake won three races back over the track at this six furlong trip and moves back to the distance after two races at 6 1/2 furlongs with hot Couton riding back so could return to winning form. Raised on Robbery ran big in four straight races from March 19 through May 30 before a poor 7th of 8 finish last month but she drops from the 25K level to the 15K level and that could be the ticked for a return to competitive form.

Race #7 Contenders: Nearlycocktailtime, Hugs and Kisses

Nearlycocktailtime won at this identical 15K claiming level over the track one before her last start on June 6 then finished 4th to tougher. The drop back to the winning level could be the key back into the winner's circle. Hugs and Kisses rallied nicely to win in her most recent start, over the track. Steiner rode her for the 1st time then and rides back and if she can put "A" efforts back to back she could win again.

Race #8 Contenders: Songandabullet, Rocky's Quest, Oldtimers Vision

Songandabullet ran his best race in months last out on 6/19 when rallying 4 wide on the turn and drawing off by 2 lengths. Steiner rides back and the 94 Equibase figure tells us the class raise is warranted. Stretching out to two turns isn't an issue either as he ran big last summer at this mile trip when second. Rocky's Quest is the one the top pick has to run down to win, the gelding having led from the start in an identical race last month before being beaten by a neck on the wire. Oldtimers Vision gets the ground saving rail coming off a 3rd place finish under these conditions. He had been off for 6 months before coming back in May and sprinting twice before going long so may improve in his 2nd route, noting he too won nicely at this mile trip last June at Emerald Downs.

Race #9 Contenders: Old Fashioned Grit, Hornfel, Awesome Indian, Arrom Bear

Old Fashioned Grit comes back from a layoff  since December. He won in his career debut last August, very gamely by a neck, then stretched out and tried stakes company, finishing a poor 5th. Considering he won fresh last summer and has been working very well he can do it again. Hornfel won by 5 in December then returned from 7 months off a couple of weeks ago for a strong 2nd place finish and should improve. Awesome  Indian adds blinkers and considering his two best efforts have been when leading from the start could prove elusive. ArromBear disappointed as the heavy favorite last month but won by 6 before that and since the poor effort came at a mile and the win came sprinting, the cut back to a sprint can only help his chances.

Race #10 Main Contenders: Southerncitynights, Cats Gulch, Badrock Canwon

Southerncitynights drops from the 15K maiden claiming level to this 5k level in a field in which most have already lost at the level. He showed speed for the first half mile in that race and in this field that early speed will be much more dangerous, making him a wire-to-wire threat. Cats Gulch shows a consistent pattern of workouts for his career debut and gets hot Joe Steiner to ride. In this kind of field a first time starter may not need a lot of ability to run well and he could be just that type. Badrock Canyon finished 2nd in two straight on 5/8 and 5/24 over the track at the slightly higher 7,500 maiden claiming level then 4th last out but at this 5K level repeating any of those three efforts may help him be there at the wire.

Suggested Tickets

Race 5 – Roxie Hart

Race 6 – Beautranda, Hetty

Race 7 – Nearlycocktailtime, Hugs and Kisses

Race 8 – Songandandabullet, Rocky's Quest

Race 9 – Old Fashioned Gal, Hornfel

Race 10 – Southerncitynights, Cats Gulch

National Handicapper Ellis Starr provides his early preview for the $2,000 pool guarantee on the 123racing Pick 6 contest wager at Emerald Downs. Saturday 4th July.

Race #5 Contender: Redsolocup

Four of the Six (Tribal Waters, Prayer for Da Bric, My Chief and Tim Tim Tim) earned their ONLY wins leading from start to finish even if only a couple of them go hard for the lead from the start then it sets up incredibly well for Redsolocup. He earned a strong win last year at this 5 1/2 furlong trip at Emerald Downs with a similar pace setup and he drops to the 12,500 non-winners of 2 lifetime level for the first time after rallying into 2nd in the stretch last out then falling back. Believe it or not, that's a winning race in this field if repeated.

Race #6 Contenders: Preachinatsagoi, Jazz Queen

Red hot trainer Metz (24% wins at the meeting) saddles three here, the two listed contenders and Another Winter, the latter one of FOUR need-the-lead types that should go way too fast early for their own good. Preachinatsagoi won three back in April from off the pace and missed by a half-length when 2nd last out, both under Mawing, whose only other ride on the filly was a winning one. Jazz Queen finished 2nd last time out and two before that and is the other good closer who should be motoring past the tiring pacesetters late.

Race #7 Contender: Northern Force, Kahului Bluff

In yet another race with a likely hot and contested pace battle, as Cash Gaming, Dallon's Gold, Perfectly Legal and Buds a Flyin all appear to be need-the-lead types, Northern Force has a big shot to win his 2nd race in a row. He shipped in from Turf Paradise for that 6/12 race, his first ever at Emerald Downs, and he found both the track and the pace to his liking as he rallied from 4th to win going away. Claimed out of the race by the strong Snowden barn (6 for 16 at the meeting), with a good outside post to track the speed he should win again. Kahului Bluff drops to the 5K level for the very first time, significant as it could make his late kick look a lot better than it did 2 weeks ago when he rallied from last to 5th. Duran rides back and all 3 of the gelding's wins have come here at Emerald, including one at this 6 1/2 furlong trip last August.

Race #8 Contenders: Raspberry Road, Christmas Caballo, Peace Arch, Red Ridge

Raspberry Road took blinkers off for his 6/5 start following two poor efforts and the result was a huge improvement as he won by six lengths with speed to spare. Barton rides back and he stretches out from the ground saving rail bred to run just as well at this mile trip. Christmas Caballo also won his most recent start, a sprint over the track, following 3 nice runner-up finishes, so we can easily expect his competitive form to continue. Peace Arch ships in from Hastings for excellent trainer Gilker, sporting a strong 7 for 19 record on the year. The horse won his debut in May strongly then finished 4th and 7th so perhaps these may be easier and he can rebound, particularly with Perez (9 for 16 for the trainer in the past 18 months) riding. Red Ridge is the ONLY two-time winner in the field. He won going away last out in a huge effort because it came in spite of him throwing his head sideways at the start and being 13 lengths back early. He's obviously got talent and might show it once again with improvement in his 2nd start around two turns in a row.

Race #9 Contender: Solemnly Swear

Solemnly Swear is 4 for 11 in his career and returns from 10 1/2 months off. Where we might otherwise be concerned about the layoff the colt recently put in a sensational 58 and change five furlong workout at Emerald to tell us he's in race shape and as his best race dominates these he should win, not to mention his trainer (Puhich) is red hot with 10 wins in 35 races at the meeting.

Race #10 Main Contenders: Charlie's Gold, Lots of Prayers, Financial Officer, Bid for Pride

Secondary contenders: Making Fire, Charming Budha, Ancient Mystery

Charlie's Gold was eased, beaten 70 lengths, in his most recent race on 6/19 but I still think he can win here as he cuts back from two turns to one turn, having shown speed for a half mile. The last time he cut back he won, easily by 4 lengths, here at Emerald, and his form before last was just fine as he missed by a head. The fact leading jockey Couton stays aboard after that last race gives hope he should return to the form that's led to all 4 career wins over the track. Lots of Prayers has been 1st or 2nd in 3 of 4 races this year, all at the level, including a runner-up effort last time out. Financial Officer has been in the top 3 in his last 3 starts, the last two off the Jenne claim. Barton gets on and this is another gelding that's done all his winning (4 wins) at Emerald in his career. Bid for Pride won in April following 9 months off and in spite of 4th and 3rd place finishes since wasn't beaten much and could return to top form at any time. This race is WIDE OPEN and probably a good one to go as deep as possible on 123 Racing Pick 6 tickets, so also consider Making Fire, Charming Budha and Ancient Mystery.

National and TV handicapper, Ellis Starr is red hot at smashing the 123raicng Pick 6 at Emerald Downs.

Saturday 27th June.

Race #5 Contenders: Bella Colomba, Quibble

If the race goes as drawn, the pace will be very hot and contested and Velocita, Boss Lori, Andiamo Deb and rail sitter Our Silver Lining are all NEED the LEAD types and it will only take a couple of them to battle for the lead and set up Bella Colomba and Quibble to close for the win. Bella Colomba rallied steadily for second 3 weeks ago and can improve while Quibble broke her maiden over the track with a nice rally 2 weeks ago and fits perfectly at this non-winners of 2 lifetime level.

Race #6 Contenders: Live Like Mike, First Flower, Knife Fork Zoom

Live Like Mike won at this 2,500 claiming level for non-winners of 2 one before last from off the pace and powerfully by 5 lengths. Overmatched at the 7,500 non-winners of 2 level last time out he can rebound back at the 2,500 non-winners of 3 level. First Flower dropped to the level for the 1st time last week and finished a decent second so could be there at the finish again. Knife Fork Zoom missed by a nose and a head on the wire 2 weeks ago when racing at this level for the first time and is another that fits as a contender.

Race #7 Contenders: Classy and Sassy, K K's Wonderwoman

In another race with a likely hot and contested pace battle, as Judy Kay, Peaceful Nation and Platinum Kisses all appear to be need-the-lead types, Classy and Sassy gets the nod as she returns from more than nine months off and races at the level for the first time while moving back to the Puhich barn, which saddled her to her maiden debut win a year ago. K K's Wonderwoman finished second to similar two weeks ago and is the other horse with a chance to close into the tiring pacesetters and finish in the top two.

Race #8 Contenders: S U M Racer, Perhaps a Pie, Haleys Rainbow

S U M Racer was overmatched in a stakes race last time out but led late and finished second right before that and two before that won. She could get a fast pace to run into and may be up in time. Perhaps a Pie broke last when bumped then rallied fast only to be checked late, beaten only a half-length at the end in spite of all that trouble. Couton rides back and with a clean trip he can win. In spite of there being FOUR need-the-lead types in the race, Haleys Rainbow could be the speed of the speed and as she's 2 for 2 on the year and still improving may not stop if she can clear the other "early" speed types in the opening strides.

Race #9 Contenders: Grinder Sparksaglo, Gross Misconduct

Grinder Sparksaglo won as he pleased 3 weeks ago at this identical NW2X allowance/40K optional claiming level, Gutierrez up then as now. He's only run this mile distance once, a year ago, finishing 4th but I his current form and with a very sharp five furlong workout coming into the race he appears capable of winning his 2nd in a row and first route. Gross Misconduct could get clear from his inside post in a short field and potentially paceless race. He also stretches out and ran poorly the only time he ran around two-turns but he won very nicely off the claim and with Mawing up last out and looks capable of going all the way in this situation.

Race #10 Contenders: Mr. Leroy, Southfork Pegasus, Churchbob, Three Point Luke

In the most wide open race on the day, Mr. Leroy gets slight preference among four that can win, finding a field in which his early speed may be very dangerous, allowing him to repeat his wire-to-wire win at the distance last December. Southfork Pegasus gets a big jockey change from Sanchez (10 wins at the meeting) to Couton (42 wins) so may hang on a lot better than when fading from 2nd to 4th last time out. Churchbob rallied from 9th to 3rd against similar last out while going very wide on the turf and with a more ground saving trip may run better here. Three Point Luke led late and settled for 2nd one before last at the level then regressed to finish 9th with no excuse last out. Depending on which version of the horse shows up today he's got a shot as well.

Suggested Ticket

Race 5 – Bella Colomba

Race 6 – First Flower, Live Like Mike

Race 7 – Classy and Sassy

Race 8 – Perhaps a Pie, Haleys Rainbow, S U M Racer

Race 9 – Gross Misconduct, Grinder Sparksaglo

Race 10 – Mr. Leroy, Southfork Pegasus, Churchbob, Three Point Luke

Cost $96

With the winner receiving over $1700 the past few weeks investing $96 still provides good reward potential for the risk. However, if there was one horse I'd be willing to remove it would be Haleys Rainbow in race 8, cutting the ticket to $64

Early Preview of Saturday's 123racing Pick by National Handicapper Ellis Starr.

Race #5 Contenders: Whiskeyonthehouse, It's Our Pleasure, Morally Bankrupt

Whiskeyonthehouse stretches out from the ground saving rail off a sprint win over the track, Gutierrez riding back even off the Gibson claim. He's won at a mile over the track and may win his 2nd race in a row. It's Our Pleasure won at this mile trip on 4/19 off a 2 month layoff then ran badly but comes back off a short layoff again and if he fires fresh as he did 2 months ago he's got a shot to win. Morally Bankrupt may win but is not a good horse to use in this kind of contest, opening at 9/5 and likely to go to post at 4/5 as he did 15 days ago when winning. He hadn't won in 10 months before the win last month and has changed trainer so may not repeat either.

Race #6 Contenders: Red Mystic, In Private, Twelfth Fan

If we want to single (only use one horse in this leg of the 123Racing Pick 6) here and go deeper in other races, Red Mystic may be the right horse to do that with. She romped by 5 lengths last month around two turns and was claimed by the sizzling hot Metz barn out of the race, the cut back to a sprint likely to give her some extra energy in the late stages and Gutierrez (25% wins for the trainer in the past year) riding. In Private won one before last as easily as Red Mystic did last out but threw in a clunker when 6th off the win. Couton was up for both and the drop in class may help the filly run better. Twelfth Fan adds blinkers, making her the one to catch. She has faded in her 3 races at the meeting but drops to this level for the first time and with blinkers may be able to repeat her start-to-finish win from last fall.

Race #7 Contenders: Lucky Echo, Cup of Soup, Ritzy Tags, Sweet Renata, Nearlycocktailtime

Lucky Echo hopped at the start and lost all chance last out because she likes to run up close or on the lead early so with a clean start has a big shot to repeat her start-to-finish win on May 2. Cup of Soup is raised multiple levels in class (7,500 to 25,000) off the claim out of a win over the track and since the trainer doing it (Ortiz) is making few mistakes at the meeting (6 for 16) and on the year (26% wins) we must pay serious attention. Ritzy Tags finished 3rd twice in a row and may have a shot. Sweet Renata finished 3rd behind Nearlycocktailtime at the lower 15K level 2 weeks ago and if either are able to run as well at this higher 25K level they could have a say in the outcome as well.

Race #8 Contender: Finding More

Finding More comes off a very sharp win when rallying from 6th of 8 after a poor start. She had been off for 6 months before that and so has lots of room to improve physically 2nd off the rest and with Kubinova riding back, the mare with a lot of back class (having beaten much tougher in her career) so very likely to win her 2nd in a row.

Race #9 Contenders: Calculated Chaos, Botch, Dare Me Devil

Calculated Chaos has won all 3 starts at the meeting, the last two off the Metz claim and all 3 with Gutierrez riding as today. He can win on the lead or from off the pace and that makes him very tough once again. Botch returned from 8 months off in April to miss by just 3/4 of a length at the allowance level then won a tougher 40K open claiming race before moving to the higher NW2X allowance condition and not disgraced at all when 2nd after hopping in the air at the start. Couton rides him very well and he must be respected as a contender. Dare Me Devil is a 13 time career winner, 8 of those coming here at Emerald Downs. He won off a six month layoff in May then came back too soon (14 days later) and regressed but can rebound to top form good enough to win.

Race #10 Contenders: Holmes Harbor, Eddie Would Go, Passion Cat, Recon Patrol

Holmes Harbor has two third place finishes and one fourth place finish at the level since returning from eight months off and although there's nothing special about those efforts the rest of these are much weaker so just repeating any of them could be good enough to win. The only real exception is Eddie Would Go, for the hot Metz barn. After showing nothing in 3 races the gelding showed a lot of early speed for a half-mile before fading last out and if improving just a bit may grab the early lead and play "come catch me" with the field for the upset win.

Suggested Ticket #1

Race 5 – Whiskeyonthehouse, It's Our Pleasure

Race 6 – Red Mystic

Race 7 – Lucky Echo, Cup of Soup

Race 8 – Finding More

Race 9 – Calculated Chaos, Botch, Dare Me Devil

Race 10 – Holmes Harbor, Eddie Would Go

Cost $48

Note: Optionally, adding Morally Bankrupt to the 1st leg of the ticket (race 5) raises the cost from $48 to $72

Today National Handicapper, Ellis Starr, provides his winning insight into how to take down the..

Emerald Downs, 123racing Pick 6 contest wager.

Race #5 Contender: Sabres Rattle, Puerto Williams, Fin Du Monde

Sabres Rattle stretches out to two turns with the rail and is likely to have an easy early lead. His ONLY win came around two turns and he finds a weak and paceless field in which he can use his speed to go all the way. Puerto Williams has been gelded since his last start and drops in class so has a shot to run better than last out when 5th and more like when winning at this mile trip last December. Fin Du Monde goes long and adds blinkers off a two sprint pattern so can run as well or better than when 2nd last out but gives away two turn experience to the other two contenders.

Race #6 Contenders: Win Photos Will Do, Visible Marq

Win Photos Will Do rallied for third 8 days ago over the track in a better-than-it-looks effort and may be approaching the form shown last November when beating similar under Gutierrez (who rides today) by a neck. Visible Marq stretches out off a sprint in which he pressed the pace early and finished 4th, meaning at this longer distance and from the rail he's going to take the lead and try to wire the field, a possibility as 4 of his 6 career wins have come around two turns.

Race #7 Contenders: Peaceful Nation, Platinum Kisses, K K's Wonderwoman, Red Ran Back

Peaceful Nation comes back from six months off with four works over the track for the red hot Metz barn and from her outside post should get the lead from the start, the same tactic that led to her 6 1/2 length maiden win one race before the one that led to the layoff she's coming back from. Platinum Kisses has done nothing wrong in all 3 career races, never worse than 2nd, and should improve off her runner-up finish last month which followed a 7 1/2 month layoff. K K's Wonderwoman finished 3rd with no excuse under these conditions one before last then was ay over her head in an open (non-restricted) claiming race. The drop in class and change to hot Couton can help. Red Ran Back ran very well when 2nd, beaten under a length last out, first off the Essex claim and she could be a factor at the wire once again.

Race #8 Contender: Rio Hondo, Hello Brown, Ontheshadyside, Big Bad Brown

Rio Hondo is a perfect two-for-two since joining the Metz barn and shipping in from Golden Gate, both easy wins with gas left in the tank. Confidently raised 100% in class, he looks tough to deny again. Hello Brown missed by a head on 5/1 over the track at a mile and following 3 months off, at the 7,500 claiming level. Raised way too high, to the 20K level, next out, he drops to the 8K level and that gives him a nice shot to return to competitive form. Ontheshadyside stretches out off a 4th place effort and off a claim and as he earned his last win on the same kind of stretchout last September he could improve nicely. Big Bad Brown stretches out off two sprints following a 7 1/2 months off and improved to rally for 2nd last out. He won on the stretchout about this time last year and has 10 career wins so it is tough to discount his chances.

Race #9 Contenders: Among the Stars, Liberty Lake, Lizzy Lass

Among the Stars won as she pleased over the track leading start-to-finish last month first off the Tollett clam and cuts back in distance, no problem as she's won sprinting before. As such we'll expect another top effort. Liberty Lake led late and settled for 4th at the much higher 25K claiming level last time out and won at the slightly lower 12,500 level prior to that son the drop and with Couton (up for the win) staying aboard she's got a nice shot to return to winning form. Lizzy Lass missed to Liberty Lake by a half-length in that 5/15 race, winning before that. She's won 11 times at Emerald Downs in her career and must be considered a strong contender.

Race #10 Contenders: Kaabraaj, Parkersnotbluffing, Land Rocket, It's Spidey Sense

Kaabraaj debuts for the strong Belvoir barn, with two excellent workouts coming into the race signaling good form. At this level he won't need to have a lot of ability to win at first asking. Parkersnotbluffing showed a lot of early speed in his 5/1 debut before fading to 2nd, then went much faster early and tired to 6th in his 2nd start. From the rail if left alone on the lead he could relax and go all the way. Land Rocket is 0 for 11 in his career but drops to this 10K maiden claiming level for the 1st time and that may be all it takes to improve of his recent 4th place effort. It's Spidey Sense is another first time starter from a good barn (Penney) with an excellent workout over the track coming into his debut and should give a good account of himself as well.

With pools in the $2,000+ range the past few weeks and the winner's share over $1,300 we should break out of our comfort zone a bit with a decent size ticket. The recommended ticket two weeks ago returned over $1700.

Suggested Ticket #1

Race 6 – Win Photos Will Do

Race 7 – Peaceful Nation, Platinum Kisses

Race 8 – Rio Hondo, Hello Brown

Race 9 – Among the Stars, Liberty Lake, Lizzy Lass

Ellis Starr, National Handicapper and 123bet brand ambassador. Hit it big on the 123racing Pick 6 at Emerald a few weekends ago

His $24 recommended ticket would have won $1383 first place prize (and 2nd and 3rd as well) as the returns on the ticket were $128.40 points. Ellis also singled Gimme a Tallboy in the last race and he returned $62.20 for the win/place/show bet. So folks, here’s a sneaky peek at Emerald Downs 123racing Pick6 for Saturday 23rd May 2015.

Race #4 Contenders: Relatively Fast, River District

Relatively Fast and River District should both benefit from a hot pace battle between Twigs N Stone, Brewingintheblue and Eight Ball Parker. Relatively Fast just won to break his maiden and fits perfectly at this non-winners of 2 level with improving to do 3rd off a layoff. River District missed by a neck on the wire under these conditions and won two before last so should be right there at the wire again.

Race #5 Contenders: Dead Eye, Won Won Oh Five, Royal Import, Rio Hondo

Dead Eye stretches out 2nd off a layoff and 2nd back in the Velasquez barn. He won on the stretchout for the trainer in December and is on the same pattern. Won Won Oh Five is also saddled by Velasquez and has been 1st or 2nd in his last six races with good form expected to continue. Royal Import ships in from Arizona for very high percentage trainer Chambers and won 3 races at this mile trip in a row in November and January so can rebound on the drop in class. Rio Hondo ships up from Golden Gate and ran well enough when 2nd one before last to be a strong factor here for the hot Metz barn.

Race #6 Contenders: Neon Blue, Gimme a Tallboy, Miners Thunder

Neon Blue fits the non-winners of 2 condition perfectly coming off a sharp win and ships up from Golden Gate for the rock solid Lucarelli/Mawing (28% wins in the last year) team. Gimme a Tallboy was our top pick 2 weeks ago when posting the 18 to 1 upset and also fits, Couton up for the win and riding back a very good sign for a repeat. Miners Thunder is the one to catch, 2nd off a 6 month layoff for sizzling hot Wright (7 for 15) and may repeat his wire-to-wire score over the track last September.

Race #7 Contenders: Marvin's Magic, Dehere Is Gone, T. D.'s Gold

Marvin's Magic and the other two listed win contenders should be beneficiaries of an early pace battle between up to FIVE of the 9 entrants. Marvin's Magicgets a jockey change back to Gutierrez, who rode him to FOUR straight wins last summer, all from off the pace. Dehere is Gone has won 4 of his last 6 races, all in Arizona, and gets Couton so could win again. T. D.'s Gold drops to the level for the 1st time and has shown the ability to close so could be passing many if not all of these late.

Race #8 Contenders: Arom Bear, Where's My Voucher, Carson's Start

Arom Bear gets a good outside post and ships up from Golden Gate to face much easier than he's faced recently. He can win on the lead or from off the pace and is one of only 2 three-time winners in the field so has an edge there as well. Where's My Voucher led start to finish last out and three before that but came from off the pace to win by a nose three races back, under Gutierrez, who rides here. He's the other 3 time winner and has a big shot to earn career win #4. Carson's Start was coming back from 7 1/2 months off 3 weeks ago when he got within a half-length of the lead in the stretch but ran into a roadblock and couldn't make progress. Couton rides back to go along with 2nd off the layoff improvement and with a clean trip he can win as well.

Race #9 Contenders: Tobiah's Journey, Koala Beach, Swiss Exploit

Tobiah's Journey was up close early in 2nd before tiring badly 3 weeks ago, his first start after 8 months off. On the same pattern last May here at Emerald Downs he won by 2 lengths at a good price, also winning versus much tougher in August. Improving 2nd off the layoff he could post the upset here. Koala Beach and Swiss Exploit both have early speed and can take the heat, so if one can clear the other they can go all the way and even if they battle, unless they battle on sizzling fractions, the could be around at the wire.

Suggested Ticket #1

Race 4 – Relatively Fast, River District

Race 5 – Dead Eye, Won Won Oh Five, Royal Import, Rio Hondo

Race 6 – Neon Blue, Gimme a Tallboy, Miners Thunder

Race 7 – Marvin's Magic

Race 8 – Arom Bear

Race 9 – Tobiah's Journey

Cost $48

Suggested Ticket #2

Race 4 – Relatively Fast, River District

Race 5 – Dead Eye, Won Won Oh Five, Royal Import, Rio Hondo

Race 6 – Neon Blue

Race 7 – Marvin's Magic

Race 8 – Arom Bear

Race 9 – Tobiah's Journey, Koala Beach, Swiss Exploit

Cost $48

Race #4 Contenders: Zippinaroundtown, Another Winter

Zippinaroundtown has a pace edge here as a closer in a race full of potential need-the-lead types. He's in top form with a win and a 2nd place finish since shipping up from Southern California and should be tough to beat. Another Winter may be the speed of the speed dropping to this level for the first time and could run back to his win in September at Emerald Downs when leading from start to finish to draw off by 8 lengths.

Race #5 Contenders: Showme Yourfriends, Mo's Flashy Date, Power Fleet

Showme Yourfriends returns from six months off and to Emerald Downs where 5 of his career wins have come. He won before the layoff and appears placed right to pick up where he left off last November, with a win. Mo's Flashy Date comes back from 11 months off, also last seen winning. He fired fresh to win a year ago off a layoff since the previous year and has been working well for his return so a top effort could be forthcoming. Power Fleet battled head-and-head for the lead from the start and tired just a bit to be 2nd last month following 7 months off so if tighter today as he should be may not stop.

Race #6 Contenders: Churchbob, Three Point Luke

Churchbob finished 2nd to similar 14 days ago and runs first off the claim by Gibson out of the race, with hot Steiner getting on, giving the horse a shot to earn career win #6 today in only his 13th career start, with 3 of those coming here at Emerald Downs from six starts over a track he apparently likes. Three Point Luke missed by a neck after leading late on 4/19 then improved to draw off by almost 3 lengths in his 2nd start at the meeting, on 5/3. Couton was up for both and rides back so he is the other horse here with the bulk of the probability to win.

Race #7 Contenders: Southern Solution, He's All Heart, Legal Victory, War Wizard

Southern Solution put together back-to-back wins here at Emerald Downs last summer, both at this 6 1/2 furlong trip, and appears to be approaching that form again as he improved off a 5th place comeback (from 7 months) in April to lead late and settle for 3rd last out. He loves to win (9 for 21) and with just logical improvement will be tough to beat. He's All Heart is another "WIN" type (11 career victories), coming off a runner-up effort over the track just 3 weeks ago and after nearly 8 months on the bench. He should improve and run even better too. Legal Victory returns from 8 months off and won  off his last layoff so may have a shot, while War Wizard gets the outside post and has good early speed to can clear the field in the first few yards and is another with a liking for this track, having won 7 times over it previously, two times last summer leading from start to finish.

Race #8 Contenders: Fire the Trainer, Betsy's Gold, Awesome Indian

Fire the Trainer broke his maiden here last June with a big rally from 7th of 9 early then went on the bench for 8 months, returning this winter at Golden Gate. He ran poorly twice there but on the return to Emerald Downs 2 weeks ago he perked back up with a winning effort and being one of the few in the field that doesn't need the lead to win may swoop past them all for his 2nd straight victory. Betsy's Gold and Awesome Indian both fit the NW1X allowance condition perfectly, coming off maiden wins, but both were earned leading from start to finish. If one can clear the other they may prove elusive and perhaps they are good enough to sit off the pace and still win so both must be considered contenders.

Race #9 Contenders: Eddie Would Go, Grindster, Budy's Gold

Eddie Would Go has never raced at this level and ships up from Santa Anita and into the red hot Metz barn so no matter how bad his 2 races to date look on paper he's likely to move up considerably by default in this weak field. Grindster  may be 0 for 12 but has never lost at the level as so many in here have and making his 2nd start off a layoff if he runs as he did right before the rest, blinkers on as today, when 3rd and beaten a length, he could have a say in the outcome. Budy's Gold ships up from Golden Gate for hot Lucarelli (5 for 15 at the meeting) and ran well enough in 2 of his last 3 starts to tougher to give him a look with these.
