From LG HIPICO, we welcome another guest handicapper - Leo Guerrero, who will be taking a shot at today's Saratoga Pick 4 & Pick 5.

Saratoga - Pick 4 & Pick 5

Race 1

INSTANT REPLAY: He has been improving steadily and today it can be his day of being a winner. His last race was a very good one!

SKILL NOT LUCK: He’s breaking from the inside and I think he’s better for him at least for today, since he can save some ground on a small field.

SARATOGA RACE COURSE - RESULTS for AUGUST 27, 2016

Posted comments on winners with notable money finishers.

RACE 8 - Grade 1 KING’S BISHOP | 3 YO | 7 FURLONGS

Drefong (4-1): has continued his march forward in two runs for Bullet Bob at 3, winning both starts while very impressive visually. Has good spacing, worked bullets since, and gets Mike Smith on the re-ride. Wide draw is the good and bad news. (won, 3-1)

Economic Model (6-1): placed gamely after making mid-race run into stretch in G3 Dwyer. Broke maiden here in 2015 and second to rapid Awesome Banner at trip in Swale. Training strongly in blinkers. (2nd, 7-1)

RACE 9 - Grade 1 FOREGO | 3&UP | 7 FURLONGS

A.P. Indian (3-1): Has won three straight, earning excellent PER and T-G ratings last out, owns tactical speed and kick and is positioned nicely to trip out. Knock is picking up six pounds as 124-pound highweight. Worthy favorite, however. (won, 4-5)

Tamarkuz (15-1): Raced dully in lone start this year, the Met Mile. Non-competitive in this race at 5 and expecting more of same today despite attracting Smith. (2nd, 6-1).

RACE 10 - Grade 1 SWORD DANCER | 1-1/2 MILES - INNER TURF

Flintshire (1-5): Two-for-two at the Spa, may be world’s best turf marathoner. Showed his class to win Bowling Green off splits of 53 and 1:19.40. Pace likely to be more realistic here. Looms everyone’s P4 single. (won, 1-5)

Money Multiplier (8-1): Has come to hand for Chad in last two starts, won recent Spa return impressively and drops six pounds. Loses Castellano but picks up Irad and has shown affinity for this course. (2nd, 5-1)

RACE 11 - Grade 1 TRAVERS | 3YO | 1-1/4 MILES

Arrogate (10-1): Has been extremely impressive visually in all two-turn starts this year, beating his elders in each of three appearances. Has speed, kick, the pole, and picks up Mike Smith. Up in class, distance and weight scale [all tote 126]. (won, 11-1)

American Freedom (6-1): Was an excellent second to Exaggerator on tiring sloppy track in the Haskell. Bejarano had his choice and sticks here. Has blinkers removed, a 31% Baffert tack. (2nd, 6-1)

Key Bets and Races for Saturday, September 3

BettingWithEllisStarr_Blog-Image.png

Saranac Stakes - Race #5 at Saratoga – Approximate Post Time 2:45 PM ET

We'll start with an early KEY BETTING race as even though this year's Saranac only drew seven, EVERY horse has a shot and as such the probability of Camelot Kitten (the 9/5 starting favorite) actually has doesn't match up with his odds. The value in the race, and not just because of high odds, is Copingaway, who opens at 15/1. He won on this inner turf course 15 days ago at 26 to 1 but it wasn't a fluke as he had finished close when 3rd and 2nd in his previous two starts. The 111 Equibase Speed Figure Copingaway earned in that 8/19 win is as good as the 110 figure favorite Camelot Kitten earned winning the similar Pennine Ridge Stakes in June at Belmont and therefore if Copingaway repeats or bettors that effort he can post the upset. Santana was aboard for both recent "A" effort at the meeting and rides back, more reasons to back this colt. Call Provision may ale be a win bet "if" his 6 to 1 starting odds, or close to it, holds up. From the barn of leading trainer Brown, Call Provision won over the course at 1 3/16 miles last month so this 1 1/8 mile trip should be no problem and the only time he ran in a stakes race at this distance, he missed by inches to Camelot Kitten.

Bet Copingaway to win or to win and place at odds of 3 to 1 or higher. Consider a win bet on Call Provision as well, at odds of 3 to 1 or more.

Play an exacta consisting of Copingaway over ALL and then play the opposite exacta of ALL over Copingaway.
(If all seven horses run, the cost of both bets at the $1 minimum is just $12 and may be well worth the investment)

Before we even start breaking down today’s plays, have you seen the field for this year’s Travers? There’s about 5-6 horses in this 14 horse field that could take it. I, of course, am hung on one horse, so we’ll see how it goes.

As we’ve done previously, we’ll be sticking with the standard breakdown of the plays: budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - Grade 1 King’s Bishop

This is a race that has a bit of potential. We see the likes of #1 Economic Model who scratched out of the West Virginia Derby to target this race, early Kentucky Derby favorite #6 Mohaymen, Zayat Stables’ #9 Jazzy Times, and #12 Tom’s Ready who looked amazing in the Woody Stephens.

Race 9 - Grade 1 Forego

The second leg of the Grade 1 Pick 4, looks to be a bit chalky to me. I see it as a two horse race between #11 A.P. Indian and #12 Marking, which makes this race one which I’ll only use in my horizontals. Of course, limiting it to 2 horses in a 12 horse field, leaves the door wide open for an upset.

Saratoga - Late Pick 4 - August 20, 2016

COMMENTS FROM AUGUST 6 P4 AT SARATOGA, NOTABLE WINNERS & MONEY FINISHERS

RACE 8: Grade 1 TEST STAKES 3YO F 7 FURLONGS

Poala Queen (20-1): tried the G1 Kentucky Oaks and Acorn to no avail in last two starts and while likely appreciating the cut back, this group appears to too tough for breakthrough performance.

Lightstream (8-1): earned field’s co-fastest figure breaking maiden at the trip in GP debut followed by win in 7F G3 Beaumont at KEE. Third in recent G1 Mother Goose, Lynch barn profitable with turnbacks and is major threat with a return to winter-spring form.

RACE 9: Grade 3 WAYA STAKES F&M 1-1/2 MILES INNER TURF

Guapaza (5-2): has been highly competitive on T-G scale in three New York appearances, albeit not so much on PER scale. Chad 28% effective with potential repeaters and winning rider Javier takes the return call.

Al’s Gal (20-1): earned top PER when fast-closing, tough-trip second in G3 Bewitch three back and was third again in G3 Modesty at AP last out. Highly competitive on both T-G and PER scales and looms stark overlay at early line odds.

RACE 10: The Grade 1 WHITNEY STAKES 3 & UP 1-1/8 MILES

Frosted (3-5): earned the highest figure ever recorded, according to Thoro-Graph’s Jerry Brown and must regress off that effort. But despite weight assignment (124 pounds), there’s plenty of wiggle room. Returns with good spacing, loves the trip (4) 2-2-0 and highly competitive albeit winless on this surface.

Comfort (8-1): hails from Todd barn that has very good record in this race. Rapidly improving 4YO is straight forward on figures, is nicely drawn with Johnny, and rates a puncher’s chance. Need at least early odds vs. this group.

RACE 11: DE LA ROSE STAKES F&M 1 MILE INNER TURF

Lady Lara (8-1): has always been promising turf mare but has disappointed often; finished willingly in rapidly run G1 Just A Game and drop just might be what Mott ordered.

Saratoga - Late Pick 4 - August 6, 2016

Comments from July 30 P4 at SARATOGA, notable winners & money finishers

RACE 8 - ALLOWANCES | 1-3/16 MILES - MELLON TURF

Ray’s The Bar (3-1) showed high promise in first two starts as 2015 juvenile but so far has failed to show added development at 3. Chad 24% in LAY-3 scenario, may come around reuniting with Javier. (WON: $8.60)

Idiosyncratic (6-1) finished well after the fact last time out, his first start since 2014, but was away again since April appearance. Chad 27% effective with 90-days+ layups and Irad a profitable 30% for this barn last two months, winning with 4 of last 11 rides. (2ND, EX: $53)

RACE 9 - Grade 1 VANDERBILT HANDICAP | 3&UP | 6 FURLONGS

A.P. Indian (5-1) comes off consecutive sharp scores going seven-eighths, including G3 Belmont Sprint Championship. Sharp blowout for streaking Delacour barn having career season and Bravo, looking to make it three straight, on board. (WON: $1.40)

Holy Boss (9-2) is effective when patiently handled but has proven inconsistent sort. True North third gets Johnny on the re-ride, loves the Spa and Asmussen has been live at meet thus far; nicely posted. (EX: $58)

RACE 10 - Grade 2 JIM DANDY STAKES | 3YO | 1-1/8 MILES

Laoban (20-1) had fastest recent blowout of 130 peers last week on this surface. Given that, and switch to Jose Ortiz, Guillot appears intent on the lead. Still winless in seven lifetime starts. (WON: $56)

Governor Malibu (9-2) has steadily improving PERs since taking state-bred stakes on Aqueduct Inner this winter. Good-finish Peter Pan runnerup was victimized by tough trip in Belmont. Has worked his way—literally—into this race and gets along well with Joel. (EX: $269.50)

RACE 11 - Maiden Claiming | F&M | 1-16 MILES - INNER TURF

Newcomb (8-1) drops into claimer for the first time for Proctor, a 23% angle, has trained steadily (missing work Jul 19?) at Fair Hill base and picks up Geroux; Looks like live ship-in. (WON: $8.80)

Smile Big (3-1) never has raced this cheaply for Chad, whose dropdowns have been hot and colt at meet thus far. Showed improved early speed when adding blinkers for MTH finale; drop and switch to Irad for logical, formidable early favorite. (EX: $29.40)

Roy Steele, award-winning Handicapper, looks to enjoy the glorious weather on this Friday afternoon at the Spa - with lots of value on offer in a competative card.

Trainer, Mark Casse, is in fine form, picking up yesterday's stakes race, and has a serious contender in today's G2 stakes in Race 9. All Woodbine connections are having a good meet, with it being just over the border in Canada.

To reap maximum return, I recommend Win on top selection in each race, then box all three selections for Ex and Tri.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!

Saratoga - Late Pick 4 - July 30, 2016

Comments from July 23 P4 at SARATOGA, notable winners & money finishers

RACE 8 - Allowance Optional Claiming | 1 Mile - INNER TURF

Our Way (6-1): ran well in recent salty spots after being victimized by a series of bad trips dating back to January at GP. Has some tactical speed and pole position with switch to Jose Ortiz indicates switch to close-range tactics. (Win: $22.00)

Tizzarunner (12-1): was a tough trip second in turf debut this winter, a listed stakes, indicative of confidence from Casse shed. Takes meaningful for barn that’s profitable 21% effective with second-time turfers. (Ex: $150.00)

Hockey School (8-1): raced wide following troubled start in last after breaking maiden by open lengths previously over yielding ground. Has five works since his last, switches to Rosario, and bred to improve given today’s two-turn dynamic. (Tri: $1,776)

Race 1

2 1/16 Miles | Open | 4 Year Olds And Up | ALLOWANCE | Purse: $65,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (1-3), Double Wagers

PICKS  3/8,5,7,    Miguel Grau
Lopsided Parx maiden winner was well-meant that day and delivered; love the pedigree with City Zip and Cox's Ridge mare; quick enough to be useful on flat in UK; chased budding star African Oil two back and responded with best race yet; player.

Race 2

6 Furlongs | Fillies and Mares | 3 Year Olds And Up | STARTER ALLOWANCE | Purse: $55,000 Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (2-4) Pick 5 Races (2-6), Double Wagers

MY PICKS 5/1,4,2, Mastic
Like the way she's progressing; 3rd but no match for Julie D in her TAM debut April 17 when beaten 8 1/2 lengths; however, then came a 2nd there May 16 and a smart maiden win in the slop there June 16 where she also got a nice Beyer (77); hasn't run since and has changed barns, but she's worked well in the interim and her last 2 races show she won't mind what kind of footing she has to deal with here.

Race 3

5 1/2 Furlongs | Open | 3 Year Olds And Up | MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT | Purse: $83,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (3-5) Pick 4 (.50) Races (3-6), Double Wagers

MY PICKS 1/6,4,2,Battle Red
He's obviously the one to beat but he has been the favorite in all 7 of his races and he hasn't been able to get it done; the horse that beat him the only time he ran over this course won back to back $100K stakes in his next two starts; Pletcher and Velazquez are on fire at the meet; this guy could improve as a first-time gelding and he might have found the right group to finally get over the top; give him one more chance? considering the makeup of this field, the answer is yes; the pick.

Race 4

6 Furlongs | Fillies | 3 Year Olds | CLAIMING : $25,000 | Purse: $50,000 Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (4-6), Double Wagers

MY PICKS 1A/7,4,2,   Delightful Erin
Won off the claim a month ago at Belmont and began her career last summer against a decent group at this course; ideal trip would be just behind the pacesetter; seems more than capable of earning her fourth victory against this modest line-up; consider.

Race 5

5 1/2 Furlongs | Fillies and Mares | 3 Year Olds And Up | ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING : $62,500 | Purse: $90,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (5-7), Pick 6 Races (5-10) Double Wagers

MY PICKS 3,5,1,2,Enchanted River
Fresh mare makes her first start off the claim for a barn that does excellent work with this type first out for them and they'll name a solid journeyman pilot; mare's efforts at the level in Louisiana earlier this season were very good and she will get pace to run at in her local course debut; contender.

Race 6

Post: 3:45 PM ET Inner turf
1 1/16 Miles | State Bred | Fillies and Mares | 3 Year Olds And Up | MAIDEN CLAIMING : $40,000 | Purse: $45,000 Exacta, Trifecta, Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (6-8), Grand Slam Races (6-9) Double Wagers

MY PICKS 8/3,1,7,6,   Kacy Lauren
She sports some of the sharper and more consistent turf form in here, and when seeing that she's being sent out by a top turf barn and making her first start against maiden claiming competition, it makes her tough to look past; Ortiz has won with 32 of 111 (29%) mounts for this barn in 2015.

Race 7

1 1/8 Miles | Fillies and Mares | 3 Year Olds And Up | ALLOWANCE | Purse: $85,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (7-9) Pick 4 (.50) Races (7-10), Double Wagers

MY PICKS 4/5,3,6,Silverpocketsfull
3-year-old will be facing older horses for the first time but she will also be getting some class relief after running in three straight Graded races; horse that won the Ashland repeated in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks; this gal may not have cared for the sloppy conditions in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks and figures to move forward in her second start back; two solid works here add to her appeal; prefer others for the top spot but can see her working her way into the exotics.

Race 8

1 1/16 Miles | Open | 3 Year Olds And Up | CLAIMING : $35,000 | Purse: $45,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Pick 3 Races (8-10), Double Wagers

MY PICKS 2/10,4,8,3,  Americas Guest
Drops in price after showing little late from a wide spot in his downstate return to this circuit; gelding does have early foot and an inside draw which should help him get involved from the bell in a heat that doesn't look to feature a lot of early foot; nice to see Castellano take interest in this pace player as well, so he must be considered.

Race 9

Post: 5:26 PM ET Inner turf

New York Stallion Series S. 1 Mile | Restricted | Fillies | 3 Year Olds | STAKES | Purse: $100,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10), Double Wagers

PICKS 8,3,6,4, Amazing Anne
Rounding out the Freud Invitational, this filly has the look of an improving 3-year-old and she shares the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure in here with Loon River; she's not out of the question in this spot and Alvarado knows her well.

Race 10

6 Furlongs | Open | 3 Year Olds And Up | MAIDEN CLAIMING : $20,000 | Purse: $37,000 Exacta, Trifecta (.50), Super (.10) Wagers

PICKS 6/11,8,9,7,   Leflore County
Returns as a new gelding after giving futile chase to a strong group at the shore; the race on June 10th is certainly worth watching on replay as he was jammed up along the rail throughout; picks up the red-hot Velazquez and may work out a comfortable stalking trip; logical contender.
