Roy Steele, Award-Winning Handicapper, takes a look at Good Saturday's excellent wagering card at Woodbine Toronto Canada this afternoon.

Hot Sunny day forecasted come post time. Seeded Pick 5 and Pick 4 with 20 cent minium wagers.

Quite a few shippers on the card and tomorrows card Eion Harty comes in from Chicago with Godolphin Horses. Interesting to see local legend.... trainer Mark Casse has got some Team Valour 2yo's in training.

All bodes for some excellent racing.

Before we even start breaking down today’s plays, have you seen the field for this year’s Travers? There’s about 5-6 horses in this 14 horse field that could take it. I, of course, am hung on one horse, so we’ll see how it goes.

As we’ve done previously, we’ll be sticking with the standard breakdown of the plays: budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - Grade 1 King’s Bishop

This is a race that has a bit of potential. We see the likes of #1 Economic Model who scratched out of the West Virginia Derby to target this race, early Kentucky Derby favorite #6 Mohaymen, Zayat Stables’ #9 Jazzy Times, and #12 Tom’s Ready who looked amazing in the Woody Stephens.

Race 9 - Grade 1 Forego

The second leg of the Grade 1 Pick 4, looks to be a bit chalky to me. I see it as a two horse race between #11 A.P. Indian and #12 Marking, which makes this race one which I’ll only use in my horizontals. Of course, limiting it to 2 horses in a 12 horse field, leaves the door wide open for an upset.

Roy Steele, Award-Winning Handicapper, returns to Woodbine for Fridays's card. Our last visit on Wednesday evening was well rewarded with an ROI of Plus $348.00 to a $2.00 Stake.

Woodbine is missing the turbulent weather which surrounds The Great Lakes.

Today's card has lots of value on offer. Turf course is in fine shape and the Tapeta main track is fast. First race on the card is the reverse sprint over 5 1/2f going Clockwise or Euro style racing as its referred to here in the Great White North.

4 races on the turf and 5 on the Tapeta.

Post Time 1.00pm est. Going Fast Main Track Good Turf.

Key Bets and Races for Saturday, August 27 – Including the All-Stakes Pick 4

King's Bishop Stakes - Race #8 at Saratoga – Approximate Post Time 3:35 PM ET

We kicked off last week's Key Races blog with a $26 winner and although not likely offering that kind of value Summer Revolution offers a lot of reward for the risk on win bets, and to start the pick 4, opening at 6/1. Most impressive winning both starts to date, both at this 7 furlong trip, Summer Revolution earned a 112 Equibase Figure here at Saratoga three weeks ago, the 2nd best last race figure in the field and BETTER THAN what Fish Trappe Road (110) earned winning the Dwyer, Mind You Biscuits (100) earned winning the Amsterdam, Tom's Ready (110) earned winning the Woody Stephens or Rated R Superstar (109) earned winning the Carry Back. Considering he's only run twice, Summer Revolution has more improving to do and picks up the services of North American leading jockey Javier Castellano to boot. Fish Trappe Road is working exceptionally well and has run three "A" races in a row, two at this trip, so must be respected. Economic Model (2nd to Fish Trappe Road in the Dwyer) and Noholdingback Bear (8 for 9 first or second in his career) have a high probability to be part of the exacta and trifecta.

Bet Summer Revolution to win at odds of2 to 1 or more. Consider a second, smaller win bet on Fish Trappe Road (who opens at 8 to 1) at odds of 3 to 1 or more.

Play an exacta consisting of Summer Revolution over ALL.

Play an exacta box consisting of Summer Revolution, Fish Trappe Road, Economic Model and Noholdingback Bear.

Saratoga - Travers Day Late Pick 4 - August 27, 2016

Tourist (5-2): won his lone start on this course, three of four at this trip lifetime and exits long series of G1 event. Has enough tactical gas to overcome wide draw and reunites with winning rider Rosario. Worthy favorite.

A Lot (10-1): drops significant weight exiting two rapidly run sprints, gets switch to Javier. Has run very well on this course but this is a different level and had better inside draw in last week’s canceled renewal.

Songbird (1-5): is 9-for-9 lifetime and needs no introduction. Biggest hurdle figures to be today’s trip but did drew out in final furlong winning CCA Oaks here at 9 furlongs July 24. Has continued to train well over the strip.

Going for Broke (10-1): obviously, Chad is en fuego and this filly has benefit of winning 9 furlongs over the track. Only loss sprinting in debut over speed-kind strip. Bred for the trip with Irad on the re-ride and will be running in the lane.

Orino (10-1): has never been entered this cheaply but draws in with salty NY-Bred group. Barn’s horses always live here, draws pole and attracts Johnny; wakeup potential.

True Charm (12-1): comes off comprehensive open lengths score in recent off-turfer here and has run very competitively in two of three turf starts; threat to repeat with Lezcano on the re-ride.

Laura’s Patriot (12-1): was a very willing fourth going 7/8s in Belmont finale and appears well suited by the turnback; getting weight for all and apprentice, struggling here, has ability.

Wantagh Queen (20-1): raced wide in one of these, her Spa turf return, following maiden-claiming Belmont win. Second at this trip last year now gets switch to Geroux; surprise package?

Our debut card didn’t go as planned, but it was nice to see a track record set by Mario Gutierrez. As with any bad beat at the track, it’s time to flip the page on the program and move on to the next race. This week we’ll be focusing on Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar Racetrack.

We’ll be sticking with the standard breakdown of the plays: budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - The Del Mar Handicap

This is a race that has my interest, particularly in #4 Metaboss. He made his return to California last time out, now under the training of Philip D’Amato where he beat out Calculator (Winner of the 2015 Sham Stakes). He has shown that he wants distance, which this will be the test, being the longest he has ran to date.

He does get a great deal of competition from #7 Flamboyant - winner of Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes and Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes. last year’s Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap 2nd place finisher, #8 Ashleyluvssugar and last year’s Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes and Grade 1 Turf Classic winner #9 Finnegans Wake.

Key Bets and Races for August 20, 2016

Play the King Stakes - Race #8 at Woodbine – Approximate Post Time 4:47 PM ET

Races become more playable with vulnerable favorites and this race has not one but two. Ami's Flatter tries turf for the first time, in his 12th career start, and the rule "never bet a horse at low odds trying something for the first time" certainly applies here are there are horses as good as he is and who have stakes wins on the grass. The other vulnerable favorite is Conquest Enforcer, who beat non-graded foes on the last month, but those were three year olds only and he's facing his elders here with no edge of any kind. Glenville Gardens was beaten just two lengths when fourth in the identical Connaught Cup Stakes in June and has won his two starts since, both on turf, one at this 7 furlong trip. Boulanger rides him well and for a horse with a 3 for 4 turf record, 6 for 12 overall, his 15/1 starting odds may prove to be a gift. Passion for Action is the third choice on the morning line at 3 to 1 and is fairly legitimate as he won the Highlander Stakes at 6 furlongs on the course last time out after missing by a neck in the Connaught Cup. Dimension posted the 20 to 1 upset in the Connaught Cup then proved that to be no fluke winning at 17 to 1 in the King Edward. He's in the best form of his career with no signs of regression. Green Mask missed by a neck in the Highlander and can be a factor but it must be noted he's also entered to run in the Troy Stakes at Saratoga today. Tower of Texas should be considered for exacta and trifecta tickets played based on his nose defeat to my top pick, Glenville Gardens, in his most recent race.

Bet Glenville Gardens to win and place at odds of4 to 1 or more. Consider a win bet on Dimension if his odds stay anywhere near his 6 to 1 morning line.

Play an exacta consisting of Glenville Gardens, Passion for Action and Dimension over Glenville Gardens, Passion for Action, Dimension, Green Mask and Tower of Texas.

Consider playing that exacta in reverse as well because if Glenville Gardens or Dimension finishes second and I am right that the two starting favorites won't run well it can be very profitable too.

Saratoga - Late Pick 4 - August 20, 2016

Poala Queen (20-1): tried the G1 Kentucky Oaks and Acorn to no avail in last two starts and while likely appreciating the cut back, this group appears to too tough for breakthrough performance.

Lightstream (8-1): earned field’s co-fastest figure breaking maiden at the trip in GP debut followed by win in 7F G3 Beaumont at KEE. Third in recent G1 Mother Goose, Lynch barn profitable with turnbacks and is major threat with a return to winter-spring form.

Guapaza (5-2): has been highly competitive on T-G scale in three New York appearances, albeit not so much on PER scale. Chad 28% effective with potential repeaters and winning rider Javier takes the return call.

Al’s Gal (20-1): earned top PER when fast-closing, tough-trip second in G3 Bewitch three back and was third again in G3 Modesty at AP last out. Highly competitive on both T-G and PER scales and looms stark overlay at early line odds.

RACE 10: The Grade 1 WHITNEY STAKES 3 & UP 1-1/8 MILES

Frosted (3-5): earned the highest figure ever recorded, according to Thoro-Graph’s Jerry Brown and must regress off that effort. But despite weight assignment (124 pounds), there’s plenty of wiggle room. Returns with good spacing, loves the trip (4) 2-2-0 and highly competitive albeit winless on this surface.

Comfort (8-1): hails from Todd barn that has very good record in this race. Rapidly improving 4YO is straight forward on figures, is nicely drawn with Johnny, and rates a puncher’s chance. Need at least early odds vs. this group.

Lady Lara (8-1): has always been promising turf mare but has disappointed often; finished willingly in rapidly run G1 Just A Game and drop just might be what Mott ordered.

Let's face it, we all try to make as much money, with as little money as possible. It’s safe too ay hitting a Pick 4 on a $16 ticket is more appealing than hitting one on a $60 ticket. We’ll be doing a segment on featured races and providing budget plays, so that players of any bankroll level can take a chance.

Our debut card will be at Emerald Downs, on their feature race day - Longacres Mile Day. We’ll be offering a budget play ($10), a taking a chance play ($25), and an in it to win it play ($50).

Race 8 - Longacres Mile, Emerald Downs

Stryker Phd is seeking his 3rd Longacres Mile win here today, as well as his first win of the year. In both of his races this year, O B Harbor (who is currently on a 4 race win streak and undefeated thus far this year) spoiled the race for him. In addition to these two, Kentucky Derby winning trainer, Doug O’Neill ships Sammy Mandeville up from Santa Anita, and Jerry Hollendorfer sends in 2 himself; one of which will be ridden by Kentucky Derby winning jockey, Mario Gutierrez.

Roy Steele, award-winning handicapper, gives the Sunday Woodbine the once over.

Saratoga got washed out yesterday which was a pity with some big priced selections.

Today's card has one restricted stakes race on offer - a 2yo sprint with one shipper making the trip from Laurel, #3 Pachi Cruze who has won at this track and level.

Small Carryover in the Super Hi 5 wager of $21,484 goes in the last race.

Guaranteed $50k Pick 5 and Guar $100k early Pick 4.

20 min wagers in all exotics except the Ex.

Weather is forcasted Sunny, Track: Fast Turf: Good

Key Bets and Races for Saturday, August 13

Adirondack Stakes - Race #9 at Saratoga – Approximate Post Time 5:54 PM ET

Silvertoni was most impressive winning her career debut in April at Keeneland before a big effort versus males when second in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes one month later. Trying turf for the first time (a soggy turf course at that) in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot in England in June, she didn't run a lick. Additionally, in the Coventry Stakes she didn't run on Lasix as she had in her first two starts. Lasix goes back on today as she moves back to dirt and the second best of 87 half-mile workout at Saratoga coming into the race signals she's in tip-top shape. As such, expect Silvertoni to get the lead as the gate opens and never look back.

Bet Silvertoni to win at odds of2 to 1 or more.

Play a Daily Double using Silvertoni in race 9 and with Reporting Star, Blacktype, Grand Arch, Tourist and Ring Weekend in race 10.

Arlington Million - Race #9 at Arlington Park – Approximate Post Time 6:09 PM ET (5:09 Central Time)

Editor's Note: While we are unable to showcase Arlington Park, we still wanted to include this for your handicapping needs. We are working on getting Arlington Park, as well as other tracks we currently are unable to offer.

While I might usually tilt towards former European runners in this classy race, I have concerns about some of them and instead am going to go for a longshot as my top choice. Greengrassofyoming has won two races in a row, most importantly the Stars and Stripes Stakes last month. Run over the same course as the Million, the Stars and Stripes was the same race used by 2015 winner The Pizza Man as a springboard to victory in this race. Greengrassofyoming earned a career best 113 Equibase figure in the Stars and Stripes, run at a mile and one-half, so cutting back to a mile and one-quarter may be just what he needs to win his second race over the course in a row under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, who rode the horse for the first time last month. The Pizza Man is a horse I have nearly always taken a stand against in big races, mostly because he is nearly always favored and there's no value in wagering on him. However, in the Million, his starting odds are 10/1 as it appears he is not in the same form he was entering last year's race off a win in the Stars and Stripes. I believe he actually is in that kind of form, as he was beaten by inches for the win when fourth last month, earning the same 113 figure as the winner. Last year The Pizza Man earned a 115 figure before winning this race, and so there is little difference in his form, other than the fact he hasn't finished better than fourth in any of his three races this year. Looking at it another way, The Pizza Man finished fifth with a 100 figure effort in his 2016 debut, improved to a 106 figure in his next start before the 113 effort last time out, so is on a pattern to improve. Jockey Mike Smith has ridden The Pizza Man just once previously, to victory in the Hollywood Turf Cup last fall (119 figure) and takes off an entire day of riding at Del Mar for this opportunity. With 10 of his 16 career wins having come on the Arlington Park turf, The Pizza Man deserves a lot of consideration as a contender. Danish Dynaformer is another cutting back from 12 to 10 furlongs, coming off a career best effort with a 113 figure in the Singspiel Stakes last month. The runner-up in the Singspiel was none other than 2014 Million winner Hardest Core, so by comparing competition it appears Danish Dynaformer fits with these. As a four year old, Danish Dynaformer may not have run his best race, and jockey Patrick Husbands rides him right back, more reasons to suspect another top effort.

Others to consider include Pumpkin Rumble and World Approval, whomust at least get an honorable mention, Pumpkin Rumble was just two noses behind Greengrassofyoming in the Stars and Stripes, finishing a nose in front of The Pizza Man. He, too, earned a career best figure (113) in the race and is familiar with the course. Additionally, he is cutting back a quarter mile in distance so, at the minimum, should be considered as a part of any exacta, trifecta or other exotic wagers we make in the race. World Approval won the United Nations Stakes last month with a near career best 117 figure and cuts back an eighth of a mile. He has not been worse than third in five races this year and I wouldn't argue with anyone that considered him with a chance to succeed.

In the Arlington Million, we can and we should bet more than one horse to win or win and place.

Bet Greengrassofyoming and Danish Dynaformer to win and place (or win, place and show) at 4 to 1 or more.

Bet The Pizza Man at odds of 3 to 1 or more.

Bet Pumpkin Rumble to win and place (or win, place and show) at odds of 7 to 1 or more.

Play an exacta box consisting of Greengrassofyoming, The Pizza Man, Danish Dynaformer, Pumpkin Rumble and World Approval

Fourstardave Handicap - Race #10 at Saratoga – Approximate Post Time 6:32 PM ET

Grand Arch won the 2015 edition of this race on a firm course at 8/1 then won the Shadwell Turf Mile on a yielding course. He wasn't disgraced a bit when third behind Tepin in the Breeders' Cup Mile, took seven months off, and ran big when third after leading late while in need of a race. Grand Arch regressed when brought back in under a month but now after nearly two months off and back on a course he likes he has every right to win again, particularly with the race very likely to be run on a yielding or soft turf course. Ring Weekend is the other main contender to win, coming off a neck loss in the Dixie Stakes on Preakness weekend (beating Grand Arch for second by a half-length) that followed 14 months on the bench. He won a stakes at Saratoga in 2014 on a soft course and considering he should run much better than when last seen second of a layoff he would be no surprise. Reporting Star, Blacktype and Tourist should be part of the exacta and trifecta.

Bet Grand Arch to win at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Play an exacta consisting of Grand Arch and Ring Weekend over Grand Arch, Ring Weekend, Reporting Star, Blacktype and Tourist.

Del Mar Race #7 – Approximate Post Time 8:10 ET (5:10 Pacific Time)

This is a good betting race in and of itself, and we can make some money playing a daily double from this race to the Best Pal Stakes (race 8) as well.

Superior Status is a Louisiana Bred related to a bunch of winners on the dam's side including two first out winners. His local works appear average for the most part but Mullins may have tipped his hand with a 47 flat four furlong gate workout on 7/30. T. Montana is on the also-eligible list but gets a long look if he gets in, also with a strong half-mile recently and as 4 of his 5 siblings to race all finished 2nd in their debuts. Budokan debuts for Hollendorfer, who rarely works his horses fast but who nearly always has them fit enough to give a good account at first asking. Like the other two contenders, there's a strong half-mile drill in his recent work pattern. Big Gray Rocket will likely be bet as most Baffert first time starters are, this one a typically fast working colt, getting Bejarano to ride. He could be something, or he could be a dud, but I'm not going to leave him off my pick 3 and similar multi-race tickets to find out. Gemstorm, Tybee Island and Antioch are all fast working first timers so can be considered for pick 3 and 4 tickets played.

Consider win bets on Superior Status, T. Montana or Budokan at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Play a Daily Double consisting of Superior Status, T. Montana, Budokan, Big Gray Rocket, Gemstorm, T. Montana and Antioch in race 7 with Drafted, Klimt and Big League in race 8.

Best Pal Stakes - Race #8 at Del Mar – Approximate Post Time 8:40 PM ET (5:40 Pacific Time)

Drafted won with the greatest of ease in his debut this spring at Keeneland then was privately purchased by Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin Stable. He went to England to compete in the Windsor Castle Stakes and was well regarded at 7 to 1 in a field of 22 but finished 17th. Back in the states and back on dirt, anything resembling that debut effort nets him a stakes win. Klimt was also impressive in his only win, last month at Santa Anita, drawing off by 5. Bejarano rides back for Baffert and he's a contender but likely to be overbet. Big League needs to improve off his debut win over the track 2 weeks ago but that's logical and he may be ignored by bettors. He showed a bit of maturity in victory and gets a good outside post so has to be considered a win contender as well.

Bet Drafted to win and place at odds of 2 to 1 or more.

Play an exacta box consisting of Drafted, Klimt and Big League.
