A nice Sunday card of racing at Woodbine today with a couple of stakes races which have attracted New York Trainers Bill Mott and Christoph Clement runners.

Yesterday resulted in a 60% strike rate for the Win wager and the Exacta wager. Plus a 30% strike rate on the Tri....

Realising $60 posotive ROI. to a $2 stake......

All Exotic wagers have a 20 cent min. stake.....

Nice Pick 5 Guaranteed 50k and a pick 4 Guaranteed 100k Starting in

Race 2 and 4 respectively.

Race 1 sees the return of Euro style racing a sprint going the wrong way (right handed) which is definatly different.

The weather is superb for racing clear skies drop in temp to a bearable level.

Main track is fast Turf good to Firm.

It's Saturday afternoon in Canada, Chuck Wagon Racing at The Stampede in Calgary Thoroughbred racing here in Toronto.

We Take in Woodbine this afternoon on a humid day but cooler than it has been, still scratches on the cards.

Yesterday, we had the awkward stat of no single winners, but a posotive ROI of $60.30. to a $2 stake.

Tks to 2 Ex and 1 Tri.

20 Cent wagers available on exotics except Exacta's.

Early Pick 4 Guar. 50k starts in Race 2. Pick 5 $100,000 Race 4.

Recommend Win top selection box all three picks for Ex and Tri.

Da Silva has 6 mounts today he is riding like the Lone Ranger at the moment.

Weather is Humid but in the 70's which is a relief.

No Carryovers.

Key Bets and Races for Saturday, July 16

After going 3 for 4 on last week's Betting with Ellis Starr feature, Ellis Starr returns with his key bets for this Saturday! Tackling 2 races at Delaware Park and 3 races at Del Mar -- with a BONUS recommend Pick 3 Play for Del Mar.

Delaware Park

Delaware Handicap - Race #9 – Approximate Post Time 5:15 PM ET

Penwith gets a KEY jockey change back to Joel Rosario, aboard for her biggest win this past February in the Royal Delta Stakes with a 117 Equibase figure. She has the tactical speed to sit in second or third in the early stages, off the pace likely to be set by either Money'soncharlotte or Mei Ling, and to take over when Rosario asks to hold off the challenges of I'm a Chatterbox and Paid Up Subscriber. I'm a Chatterbox put in an eight-length romp last month in the local prep for this race, the Obeah Handicap. Likely to improve off the 104 figure last month back to the form shown last summer, I'm a Chatterbox could be formidable in this year's Delaware Handicap. Paid Up Subscriber ran the best race of her career last month when drawing off to a three-length win in the Fleur De Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs, earning a 108 figure similar to the one I'm a Chatterbox earned in last year's Cotillion Stakeswin.

Bet Penwith to win at odds of 2/1 or higher.

Play doubles from race 9 to race 10 as follows:
Penwith in race 9 to Inspector Lynley, Keystoneforvictory, American Patriot and Mighty Mo in race 10.
Penwith, I'm a Chatterbox and Paid Up Subscriber in race 9 to Keystoneforvictory and American Patriot in race 10.

Kent Handicap - Race #10 – Approximate Post Time 5:45 PM

American Patriot added blinkers last time out and ran the best race of his career, earning a 102 Equibase figure on the turf at this mile and one-eighth distance. Jose Ortiz comes in from New York to ride for North American leading trainer Todd Pletcher on a colt I expect to improve mightily 2nd time in blinkers. Keystoneforvictory has won 2 turf routes in a row, the last a little stakes at Gulfstream Park by five lengths, the one before that at this 9 furlong turf trip. Solid turf jockey Centeno takes the call for Maker the horse is 4 for 5 in his career on turf.

Bet BOTH American Patriot and Keystoneforvictory at odds of 5 to 2 or more.

Play an exacta box consisting of American Patriot, Keystoneforvictory and Inspector Lynley.

Play an exacta box consisting of American Patriot, Keystoneforvictory and Mighty Mo.

Del Mar

Del Mar – Early Pick 3 – Races 4 thru 6

Race 4 – Approximate Post Time 3:40 PM Pacific Time, 6:40 PM Eastern Time

With Red Car Mac. Midnight Edition and Tomasino all bent on having the lead at any cost from the start. Spanish Hombre should win his 2nd in a row. He rallied from 6th to win last out under Desormeaux, who rides back, with a field high and career best 101 Equibase Figure that should be improved upon in only his 2nd dirt start since the Lewis claim.

Bet Spanish Hombre to win at odds of even money (1/1) or more.

Pick 3: Cost $9 at the $1 minimum level
Race 4 – Spanish Hombre
Race 5 – Ohio
Race 6 – ALL 9 horses

Race 5 – Approximate Post Time 4:10 PM Pacific Time 7:10 PM Eastern Time

Ohio won his U.S. debut in March, at this mile turf trip, after 6 months off, then ran poorly on dirt, an irrelevant effort. Back on turf he scorched a mile in 1:34 last month and even accounting for the speed of the course earned a sparkling 115 Equibase figure. He stalked the pace and took over with an 8th of a mile to go before widening, still getting the last 1/4 in a sizzling 22.9 seconds, graded stakes quality time, so in this restricted stakes he wins if he repeats that effort.

Bet Ohio to win at odds of 8 to 5 or higher.

Yellow Ribbon Stakes – Race #9 – Approximate Post Time 6:10 PM Pacific Time, 9:10 Eastern Time

Nancy From Nairobi won the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes in May off a 2 month layoff, then ran poorly when 6th in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes. Nancy From Nairobi comes back from almost the same layoff as when she won the Royal Heroine, her 3rd win in a row, and with Smith taking over for the first time has every right to repeat that effort and win this similar Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes. Finest City won at grade 2 stakes sprinting on the main track in April then wasn't disgraced at all when 3rd behind champion Beholder in the Vanity Mile, also on dirt. She's only run on turf once, in a sprint, and is bred to adore this two-turn turf trip as a granddaughter of Lemon Drop Kid. Desormeaux rode her to the grade 2 win, not the defeat, and gets back on, and the filly put in a sharp 46.2 half-mile drill coming into the race so appears to be on edge or potentially a career best effort and upset win. Majestic Heat moves from 2nd level allowance to grade 2, a big step up, but may be ready for these. She joined the Mandella barn last October for a 4th place finish in a grade 3 at a mile on turf, then took 8 months off. Returning with a win in an allowance race, she's bound to improve nicely again and with the hot Prat/Mandella team in her corner is yet another with a shot in a race in which the other six don't appear to have much probability at all.

Bet Nancy From Nairobi to win at odds of 2 to 1 or higher. Consider a win bet on Finest City at 5 to 2 or more and on Majestic Heat at 7 to 2 or more.

Play an exacta box consisting of Nancy from Nairobi, Finest City and Majestic Heat.

Comments from July 9 PICK 4 on GP winners and notable money finishers

RACE 8 - G1 BELMONT DERBY INVITATIONAL | 3YO | 1-1/4 MILES - INNER TURF

13-DEAUVILLE (4-1) is best of the Euros on paper given lots of Group 1 and Group 2 experience in which he was highly competitive with some of Europe’s best 3-year-olds. Jamie Spencer comes with the package, mitigating the draw somewhat, and O’Brien adding first-Lasix, of course. (won, $14.60).

4-HIGHLAND SKY (8-1) has never failed to fire in deep stretch and narrowly missed with strong finish in G3 Pennine Ridge prep for this; added distance might not suit as pedigree a little light for the trip. (2nd, $134.50 exacta)

RACE 9 - G2 SUBURBAN HANDICAP | 3&UP | 1-1/4 MILES

5-EFFINEX (5-2) threw in a bad one in wide trip non-effort as the Foster favorite after solid score over Melatonin in Oaklawn ‘Cap prior; reunites with Smith and highly likely to improve on home grounds and at this trip. (won, 6.30)

7-SAMRAAT (12-1) has raced competitively in all three starts off a lengthy layup but gave no indication he’s back to top 3YO form; will be a pace factor reuniting with J Ortiz. (2nd, 56.50 exacta)

RACE 10 - G1 BELMONT OAKS | 3YO Fillies | 1-1/4 MILES - INNER TURF

12-CATCH A GLIMPSE (2-1), a Horse to Watch since allowance winning turf debut at 2 and is now 7-for-7 on this surface, including defeat of males in G3 Penn Mile. Has more than enough gas to clear from the outside behind Geroux, the country’s leading or near-leading 2016 stakes rider. Has excellent PERs and bottom-side distance pedigree. (won, 8.80)

4-TIME AND MOTION (6-1) is undefeated in three starts at 3 on three disparate courses including today’s. Comes up to added distance the right way, has two-sided route pedigree and Johnny, aboard for the three scores, takes the re-ride. Post and style suits dynamics nicely. (2nd, 45.80 exacta)

RACE 11 - G3 BELMONT SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP | 3&UP | 7 FURLONGS

5-A.P. INDIAN (10-1) comes off rapidly run score at the distance at Parx, beating ‘Roxbury’ by 3 open lengths handily. Delacour is 26% effective in LAY-3 situations and is having a career year—profitable at 29%. Gelded 6YO is 2-for-2 at trip and Bravo re-rides (won, 13.80).

9-MARKING (4-1) turns back to what might be a perfect distance for his style after chasing the strong Met Mile pace, finishing ahead of six rivals in his first start since disappointing in Dubai’s G2 Godolphin Mile; broke maiden here, bullet at Greentree base and Lezcano on a return call; formidable rival (2nd, 53.00 exacta).

Roy Steele Award winning Handicapper gives his views on Fridays card at Woodbine Toronto Canda.

The weather of late has been brutally hot which in turn has meant a lot of scratches in recent cards 10 on Wednesday evening alone.
A break in the weather with cooler temps than the 105 F we have been experiencing is expected all weekend.

The big talking point is the form of jock Da Silva he is like the weather Hot Hot Hot. 4 winners on Wednesday nights card.Which will put his strike rate at around 30% possibly the best in North America at this present time. Of course he is getting the ammunition but each year he is getting better and better leaving the recent last ten years "king of the Ring" Patrick Husbands in his wake.

The tracks especially the Tapeata are however been holding up really well in the exteme conditions. The number of scratches should decrease with the cooler temps.

The Super Hi 5 wager has a Carryover of 17k plus.. min stakes of 20 cents can be used on that wager and all exotics starting at the Trifecta. With a Guaranteed Pick 4/5.

Main Track is fast    and the Turf is good to firm but riding well.

Roy Steele makes his selections for Sunday's card at Woodbine which has a lot of wagering value. The heat has eased off some what and track conditions have improved nicely. No major Carryovers.

Yesterdays Best Bet won as expected.

Race 8 today sees the Bison City stakes for 3yo fillies. Like our selection yesterday, 5 of todays runners last race was the Woodbine Oaks. They compete over a shorter distance today.

Excellent days handicapping yesterday at WOODBINE which resulted in my Picks having 5 Wins, 5 Ex, 2 Tri's.

Amazing what a bit of rain can do for the selections....track was in excellent condition.

Today a few thunder storms are forecast just before racing which will have the tracks in tip top condition.

The Super Hi 5 jackpot carryover was won so it reverts to zero today. But the pick 5 is guaranteed for 50k and the early Pick 4 is Guaranteed for 100k.

The Super Hi 5 is the last race on the card they normally have a low claimer or low maiden affair .... today its a 47k Alw so a better class of horse is entered and my BEST BET is selected in that particular race.

The Hi 5 has to be played today the odds are in the players favour for once.

Main Track: Fast | Turf: Firm.

Key Bets and Races for Saturday, July 9

Dwyer Stakes - Race #7 at Belmont – Approximate Post Time 3:57 PM ET

Fish Trappe Road gets a cozy outside post for this one turn mile trip that will enable him to sit off likely early pacesetter Laoban, who adds blinkers and whose best races came when on the lead from the start. Never worse than second in three previous starts at Belmont, Fish Trappe Road comes off a career best effort when second at 25 to 1 in the Woody Stephens Stakes last month with a 107 Equibase Figure and he has a big shot to improve off the effort as he's making his third start off a layoff. Economic Model has to be used on any exacta tickets played but is a poor win bet opening at even money. He has won two in a row but he doesn't stand out here based on the 110 figure earned last out winning the non-graded Easy Goer Stakes the same day as Fish Trappe Road finished second in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens. Voluntario cuts back to one turn off a nice win in Maryland with a career best 101 figure. He has been first or second in four straight and is trained by Rudy Rodriguez, so must be respected as a contender. Laoban can take these a long way and although a maiden gets John Velazquez. His 2nd place finish in the Gotham Stakes in March earned a 108 figure which if repeated here gets him a piece at the least.

Roy Steele award winning Handicapper, takes in the Friday 9th race card at Woodbine Toronto Canada,

There has been no rain for nearly a month now, the heatwave which is producing temps of 86 plus come racetime, makes for a testy day in the back stretch to say the least. Main Track is watered inbetween races which gives some relief to the sweltering conditions.

Lots of wages and a nice carryover folks.....

50k Guar. Pick 4 commences in Race 4 with 20 cent exotics.

Carryover for the Super Hi 5 Wager in the last Race $122,587.

Post Time: 1:00pm | Tapeta: Fast | Turf: Firm

Comments from July 2 PICK 4 on GP winners and notable money finishers

RACE 10: 1-Delta Bluesman (5-2) is the latest Navarro miracle. Seeking third straight and will be very tough out if runs back to either of last two; layover figures on the Pricci Energy Rating scale (won, $5.00). 3-Limousine Liberal (2-1), still seeking first graded win, has been highly competitive in graded company. Worthy (5) 2-2-0 slate at the trip but lacks Gulfstream experience; mixed signals (2nd, $10.20 exacta).

RACE 11: 7-Doctor J Dub (15-1) battled on the pace in overnighter won by ‘Successful’ before tiring then given conditioner going longer with blinkers off in last. Back to sensible trip with blinkers back on switching to Gaffalione (won, 58.00). 8-Daring Kathy (7-2) is meeting males for second straight time after finishing second in the Bonita last out. Stakes-toughened 5YO fits the dynamics and is very worthy (6) 3-1-0 on this course. Well spotted, Cornelio sticks, poised for forward move; main danger (2nd, 223.40 exacta).

RACE 12: 7-Spelling Again (3-1) ships south for upper trainer Cox, profitable in graded stakes and with ship-ins, including (3) 1-1-0 slate this meet. Grade 2 winner was good third two back in G2 Ruffian behind freaking Cavorting--repeated in G1 Phipps beneath L Saez, taking a return call here (won, 8.80). 1-Cali Star (9-2), clearly pointed to this, is very well suited to dynamics—one turn mid-distance sprint, comes into this off a series of bullets for Wolfson, 25% effective with his beaten favorites. Cornelio batting 22% since returning to SoFla (2nd, 42.00 exacta).

RACE 13: 2-Sweetontheladies (15-1) is going off mixed signals here with steady workline for 18% debut sire but barn is 1-for-21 with its recent newcomers (won, 20.80). 3-Hidden Journey (4-1) earned competitive first-out PER, continuing gamely for third following wide rally. But pedigree on the light side and barn 0-for-46 thus far in 2016. Tough read for us (2nd, 131.20 exacta).

Comments from June 18 PICK 4 winners and notable money finishers

RACE 7: 3-Tiz Twice (5-2): showed marked improvement with early speed when dropped to this level and stretched to route last out. Bred for distance both sides, dam’s five winners include three on turf, and Alvarado on the re-ride. Sharp blowout, very solid contender. (won @ $8.80)

4-Say Cin Cin (12-1): drops into claimer for first time since November 2015 and raced competitively despite rough trip in lone grass try; switch to Luis Saez. (2nd 7-1, 149.60 ex)

RACE 8: 6-Zennor (6-1): showed marked improvement switching to grass and adding Lasix for last two as Spa 2YO. Reported first-gelding makes season’s debut for McLaughlin, 23% profitable with 90 days + layups, Irad sticks and strong upstate works. Could prove key.

9-Ice Cutter (10-1): earned competitive PER for Clement, 21% effective going dirt to turf. Makes season’s debut off very solid and steady workline.

RACE 9: 5-The Imposter (5-1): remains at proper level after just missing in 6F Belmont return. Reunites with winning rider Saez and is good value at early line odds. Bullet in holster for this. (won 11.60)

11-U S Citizen (5-2): drops to winning level and suitable, slightly longer trip after gamely third chasing pace throughout rapidly run 6F Belmont turf debut. Gelded 7YO switches to leading rider Ortiz for Jacobson, 27% effective with beaten favorites. Formidable favorite. (2nd exacta 56.00)

RACE 10: 2-Stormin Saratoga (4-1): had some gate issues in off-turf debut going 7F, chasing the pace then stopping late. Todd 26% with second-time starters and gets Javier. More mixed signals. (won 13.80)

10-Alyssa and a Lisa (8-1): drops into maiden claimer for first time in season’s debut, returning for Contessa, profitable with 90-days + layups. Purposeful workouts returning for barn having a solid meet. (2nd exacta 149.00)

Key Bets and Races for Saturday July 2 & Sunday July 3, 2016

Saturday, July 2, 2016

Mother Goose Stakes - Race #9 at Belmont – Approximate Post Time 5:45 PM ET

This is a "KEY BETS" blog and even though there are just seven horses in this year's Mother Goose, one of them is a "KEY BET". Lightstream is a perfect three-for-three in her career but given the much higher name recognition of Rachel's Valentina and Lewis Bay, Lightstream opens at 5 to 1 odds and that is what makes her a KEY BET. She won the Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland in only the second start of her career and off those two seven furlong races tried turf to win a stakes at Belmont in May. Rosario gets on, she gets an outside post from which she can stalk whoever decides to lead, and her 94 last race Equibase Figure is higher than the 90 Rachel's Valentina earned when 6th with no excuse in the Kentucky Oaks and similar to the 95 Lewis Bay earned when 3rd in the Oaks, but as a more lightly raced filly, Lightstream has more of a right to continue to improve than either of the other two. In my opinion, if you ran this race 100 times, Lightstream would win at least 33 of those and so her odds should be 2/1, not 5/1.

Bet Lightstream to win at odds of 2/1 or higher.

Affirmed Stakes - Race #5 at Santa Anita – Approximate Post Time 3:30 PM PT (6:30 PM ET)

Very similar to the Mother Goose, the Affirmed Stakes only drew five but the favorite, Danzing Candy, opens at 4 to 5 based on where he ran last, not how good he is. Winner of the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March, he proved to be nothing more than a one-dimensional need-the-lead type when fading to fourth in the Santa Anita Derby before a similar fade job to 15th in the Kentucky Derby, going from a 110 Equibase figure to 83 then 81. On the other hand, Dalmore has improved markedly in his last two dirt route starts in California, first when trying two turns on dirt for the first time in March then three later when winning a very highly rated allowance event with a stakes quality 105 figure. From the same connections as Exaggerator, particularly with Kent Desormeaux riding for brother Keith, Dalmore should take another step forward to win his first stakes and any odds near his morning line of 4/1 could prove to be a gift.

Bet Dalmore to win at odds of 3 to 2 or higher.

Play an exacta box consisting of Dalmore and Prince of Arabia (who finished 2nd to Dalmore the last time they met)

Sunday, July 3

United Nations Stakes - Race #9 at Monmouth – Approximate Post Time 4:52 PM ET

Wake Forest is a legitimate favorite, having just won an identical Grade 1 stakes at this 11 furlong trip in May when victorious in the Man o' War Stakes. John Velazquez rode him then as today and the horse won the Man o' War with a tremendous burst of speed after having to wait for room and altering course in the stretch. That kind of turn of foot wins these races, but there are three others with very similar Equibase figures in their most recent efforts that all could run well, some at high odds. Money Multiplier finished 2nd behind Wake Forest in the Man o'War after making the lead late and fits on all counts as a contender. Considering he had run in a first level allowance before that, both Bigger Picture and Riviere Du Loup could have a say in the outcome here as well as both come off 2nd level allowance wins, with all 3 horses earning 104 to 106 figures that match up well in this field.

Bet Wake Forest to win at 3 to 2 or more. Consider win bets on Riviere Du Loup and Bigger Picture at 4 to 1 or higher.

Play an exacta of Wake Forest over Money Multiplier, Bigger Picture and Riviere Du Loup.

Play exacta and trifecta boxes consisting of Wake Forest, Money Multiplier, Bigger Picture and Riviere Du Loup.

Queen's Plate Stakes - Race #10 at Woodbine – Approximate Post Time 5:36 PM ET

In an extremely wide open race, there is money to be made as many horses with a legitimate shot to win open at 10/1 or higher. All On Red has run only three times but his last two races were excellent. He won in April in his 2nd career start with a 108 Equibase figure that is TOPS in the field, then after moving to the Attard barn he made his debut on the all-weather surface and missed by a neck. Very likely to improve 2nd time over the surface and with DaSilva riding back, his 12/1 starting odds compel us to take a close look as there's no doubt with his breeding (a son of Hard Spun) he's going to get the mile and one-quarter trip, and he's facing Canadian breds for the first time. Scholar Athlete is another who starts at 12/1, with one of the top jockeys in North America, Jose Ortiz, taking the call for the ever dangerous Graham Motion. After winning just 1 of 7 to start his career, Scholar Athlete added blinkers last time out and the result was a career best effort with a 102 figure at Belmont. He has won at Woodbine previously so the transition from turf to all-weather will be no issue and he too is moving from open (not-restricted) to Canadian breds only. Esposito got in a great prep over the track last month when winning at seven furlongs following 6 months off and has a lot of upside as well. Gamble's Ghost gets a five pound break as the only filly in the field and this race has a lot of history of fillies running well so she must be respected as well, particularly as she's on an improving pattern and just missed by a nose in the Woodbine Oaks. Amis Gizmo won the Plate Trial in mature fashion from off the pace and is another that can run well, as can Plate Trial runner-up Shakhimat and Leavem in Malibu.

Bet All On Red and Scholar Athlete to win at odds of 4 to 1 or higher. Consider win bets on any of the other horses listed above at 5 to 1 or more.

Play an exacta consisting of All On Red and Scholar Athlete over ALL. Consider reversing the exacta as well and playing ALL over All On Red and Scholar Athlete.

Roy Steele Horsewhispererusa.com Gives his thoughts on Wednesday evenings Woodbine card.

At first glance it doesnt look to enticing.
The reason being is.... there's some excellent racing this coming weekend ....Nearly $2 MILLION on offer on Sunday alone. The QUEENS PLATE BEING THE HIGHLIGHT.......
So all the half decent horses will be slated for a run in one of the weekend races.

HOWEVER in saying that and handicapping the field there is lots of value on offer.
I mean LOTS and Iam confident I have sourced them all for a WIN top selection in each race then BOX all three each race for EX And TRI.

PlUS PLUS the big Carryover in the last race the Super HI 5 (first five home) is up for grabs.
Dont forget 20cent min wager on all exotics PLUS 100k Guar. Pick 4 starting in Race 4.

Weather is steaming hot going to be around 75degs F come race time.
Tapeata Main Track fast..... The  Turf Track you would think the hoofs would be rattling on the firm ground .... But the ground staff have done a excellent job keeping the turf course raceable.

Will have a full preview of the First Leg of The Canadian Triple Crown THE QUEENS PLATE later in the week when the post draw is done.
