Belmont Park

Pennine Ridge Stakes - Race 8
Post Time: 5:13 PM ET

Hammers Vision returned from seven months off on 5/7 at Belmont and settled for 2nd after leading late. He's going to be a lot more physically fit here and the 106 Equibase Figure he earned is the 2nd best last race figure in the field so with logical improvement he's got a square shot to upset opening at 8/1. Highland Sky just won the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct on the turf with a 100 figure, a nice improvement from the 95 figure earned a month earlier when returning from a 5 month layoff. He too has improving to do and is another with a big shot opening at 8/1. Dressed in Hermes is already a winner on turf at this grade 3 stakes level. Draw a line through his last race when wide throughout. His best effort, with a 107 figure, would be competitive if repeated. Camelot Kitten was 18/1 when he won on Derby day but opens at 8/5 here. He's got a shot again but isn't worth betting to win at low odds as he's no standout.

Race 1 - Clm 5000N2L for F&M 3yo+ going 6f
1 Eagle of Delight - looked like a winner last out, but gave way at the 1/16th pole. Better luck today.
5 S W Tizherself - leading rider takes mount again. Closed well, taking 2rd. Barely beaten.
3 Sweet Candy - tight last 1/18th, beaten out by SWTizherself. Extra room should lead to better.
6 Saratoga Angel - led the way last out, tired out of the turn. Will be on the lead here again.
Race 2 - Clm 6250(6.25-6)N4L for 3yo+ going 6f
4 Charon’s Obol - lost by just a head last out. In the money last 7 races. Key here.
7 Molten Steel - gate to wire finish last out, with more in the tank. Coming in off 6mo layoff.
6 Scattered Dreams - part of the contested finish with Charon’s Obol last out. Keep an eye on him!

Race 3 - Clm 4000N2Y for F&M 3yo+ going 6f
3 Vinny’s Wildcat - battled it out last time. Was able to put off a viable effort to remain 2nd.
5 Favorite Patriot - coming in off a 2 month layoff. Whitney has had success with this horse.
4 Chasing Stars - bit of a closer. Trainer switch prior to this race - new trainer is 0 for 12 1st out.
2 Gottcha Blessin - dueled it out last time out, which caused him to weaken. Horse has potential.
Race 4 - Md 25000(25-22.5) for 3yo+ going 1m70yds on the TURF
2 Gotsum Goldust - tries the grass after being in the money 4 of 5 on the dirt. Will try to be on lead.

Race 5 - Alw 33300N1X for 3yo+ going 6f

2 Wild WIlly Dean - broke maiden last out, looking to build off that. May be slightly mismatched here
1 Lay Down the Law - great showing first out for new trainer. Watch next out.
Race 6 - Clm 6250(6.25-6)N4L for 3yo+ going 1m70yds
7 Pefiolo - beaten by a neck last out. Should be an easy win here today.
2 Aisle Ring - gave when when collared entering the stretch. Should do better today.
5 Back Scatter - was asked at the 3/8th pole and went all out. if timing can get down, should do well.
6 Spiked - 1st off the claim, with a trainer going at a 50% rate. Is entered tomorrow, so may scratch.
Race 7 - Clm 4000N2Y for 3yo+ going 6f
3 Hanky Doodle - won last out against similar company. Test to see if that was a fluke.
4 Leilani’s Ticket - driving win last time, winning by just under 2 lengths. Tougher competition today.
6 Payton’s Victory - tough race here for this closer. Should be able to get a piece, however.
5 Condo Closing - just can’t seem to close the deal. May get up for 3rd, but 4th or 5th more likely.
Race 8 - Clm 5000N2L for F&M 3yo+ going 5f
2 Q T Bird - Comes in off her maiden win just over 2 weeks ago. Expect her to be closing in.
4 Foxy Sandy - Broke her win after 3 tries - on a speed favoring track. Coming off a 2 month layoff.
3 Pinot Meunier - Good workout figures. Has been improving, but has been tiring as of late.
1 Hidden Pearl - Moves back to 5K claimers where she finished 2nd last time out. Keep an eye on.

Roy Steele award winning handicapper from www.horsewhispererusa.com, takes a look at 4 stakes races at Belmont Park on this, a day when all Veterans think of those they served with and especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

One such person and horse racing lover was Staff Sgt Neil, Green Beret. From New Jersey. A family friend.

I myself, am a veteran, my son is still serving (British Army), and was serving in Afghanistan in 2008 and had recently met Billy Neil while both were deployed up in the mountains, near Sperwan Ghar as Part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Tragically Billy was killed some days later by an IED. So when we are writing out picks on this Memorial Day Monday spare a thought for those defending our liberty and let's all "Cheer on those winners"

"Lest We Forget"

Eclipse Stakes - Race 8
Post Time: 4:51 PM ET

Sometimes races are as much about who is UNLIKELY to win as much as who is LIKELY to win. As such, Melmich sticks out in a short field in a race I which the morning line favorite Are You Kidding Me will be bet on the drop in class from grade 1 to grade 2 stakes and the fact he won a grade 2 stakes last November over the track. However, Are You Kidding Me finished 8th in that grade 1 race, following five months off, never really running even a bit so I think he's going to need another race or two before rebounding. The second morning line favorite, Breaking Lucky, has finished third in his two races this year following a six month layoff and has not threatened a bit. Back to Melmich, who returns from six months off, last seen winning the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes over the track. He won his 2015 debut off a five month rest and as he's fired to win fresh before, he is likely to do so again.

Bet Melmich to win at odds of 3 to 2 or higher.

Play an exacta consisting of Melmich over Breaking Lucky, Florida Won and Are You Kidding Me.

Play a trifecta of Melmich over Breaking Lucky, Florida Won and Are You Kidding Me over Breaking Lucky, Florida Won and Are You Kidding Me.

Belmont Park - Late Pick 4

Listed in post-position order by program number

1-Easy Comparison (30-1): has early speed but is winless in four turf starts and only one of 4 siblings have won on turf. Trainer 0-for last 60 starts on grass.

2-Performance Bonus (6-1): won recent two-turn debut for Chad in Parx off-the-turfer. Of dam’s 7 winners to race, only one grass winner. Trainer 30% profitable FT turf; mixed signals.

3-Harpoon (12-1): is 1-for-11 on grass, owns a few competitive Pricci Energy Rating and Bruce Brown can get them ready off lengthy layoffs but barn having tough luck at meet (26): 0-3-7 through Wednesday.

4-Captain Moss (10-1): is 2-for-2 on Belmont turf 1-for-12 doing anything else and earned competitive PER last out for Englehart, 25% with repeaters. Tough dynamics for likely stalker.

5-Hello Don Julio (3-1): could not handle yielding ground in course debut after chasing pace in 12-furlong Grade 2 prior at GP. Will have no excuses here for Dilger, profitable with allowance routers.

6-Circus Performer (7-2): had improved early speed for Todd in KEE finale last out at 1-1/2 miles. Conditioning edge on these turning-back and reunites with winning pilot Rosario here.

7-Tale of Fancy (4-1): racing in career form for Tagg, has earned good PERs in 2 of last 3, handles any type of ground And Reunites with winning partner Jose Ortiz; 2-for-5 at this trip, 0-for-6 all others.

8-Mark My Style (5-1): earned top Rating winning his last, has won this course and distance, fits race dynamics nicely for Toscano, profitable with repeaters and second-off-layup types. Luis Saez re-rides.

9-Mobridge (15-1): is not impossible despite 17-month absence with Mott calling shots and winning rider Alvarado aloft. Owns 3-for-11 lifetime slate with all wins this course/distance.

RACE 1 | Daily Double / Exacta / Trifecta / Superfecta / Pick 3 / Pick 4 | 6:00pm ET
Clm 16000(16-14)N3L for 3yo+ going 6f
5-Quality Investment (7/2)
1-I’m Zonin (8/5)
6-Che La Luna (9/2)
3-Gingers Hero (10/1)

Quality Investment grabbed his second career win in his last outing - by just a neck. Third place finisher that race came back to win his next outing. Took a month off after the win, but his latest work shows he hasn’t lost any fitness. 7/2 morning line, expecting closer to 2:1-5:2. I’m Zonin drops back down to claiming level after having no luck at the Allowance level. Hopefully will benefit from that experience at this level. Did break his maiden at the $20k level and grabbed a claiming win at the $12.5k level. Che La Luna comes off a win at the $7500 level. Faces more competitive winners here, plus the jump in class. Did run a career high 74 last time out, in which he won by 10 lengths - not sure if it speaks more for the horse or the competition he was up against. Gingers Hero has been having a bit of trouble maintaining energy by the end of the race, may want to cut back to 5.5f or so, looking for an acceptable run here.

RACE 1 | Daily Double / Exacta / Trifecta / Superfecta / Pick 3 | 12:55pm ET
Md Sp Wt 50k for 3yo+ going 1m 70yds
1-Machu Picchu Sky (3/1)
6-Gloves Off (5/2)
4-Aimed (5/1)
2-Southwest Trail (7/2)

Machu Picchu Sky comes back in after 3 straight 2nd place finishes after setting the pace the entire race until the stretch. Hoping he can hold on today. Gloves Off ships in from NYRA. Picks up Jersey Joe, after an impressive ride by Castellano last time out. Connections look to still be experimenting with this colt, hopefully this is the right set up finally. Aimed takes a cut in money this time out, while stretching out. Put in 3 perfect workouts in preparation for this race. Fired too late last time out at Parx (Dec 12, 2015), hopefully Alvarado fires earlier this time. Southwest Trail may be a bit outclassed here, but taking a shot regardless. Has had no luck since his debut race in hitting the board. At best I can see him hitting 4th.

This could be DEJA VU with Nyquist looking the part of a horse on a Triple Crown mission and following in the hoof prints of American Pharoah. JP Reddam Owner and native of my town Windsor Ontario Canada, has come close before in this series and will have learned a lot with his Doug O'Niell team.
